beat with STICKS

God, Edmund Bertram/Fanny Price is seriously one of the grossest canon het couples ever. Ew ew ew ew EW. I sort of want to beat them away from me with sticks. Seriously, in my head, I'm forced to have this whole big AU for the ending of the book going on, where Mrs. Rushworth disgraces herself with someone else, and it ends with Fanny with Henry Crawford and Edmund with Mary Crawford, just to make the book bearable.

In conclusion, Mansfield Park is really not my favorite Austen.

Oh. I hear you. I've not even managed to re-read it because my greatest desire is to slap Fanny Price (and Edmund) with dead fish.

The book as a whole I didn't mind as much this time -- I just finished rereading it for my British Novel class -- but the ending. GAR.

i took an austen class in undergrad, and my professor - whose specialty was austen - always called mansfield park "the bad one". hee.

heeeee. that is AWESOME.

Or Fanny with Mary Crawford. Or maybe that's just in the movie...it's been a while since I read the book.

I have never seen the movie! I've heard it's way different than the book, and Fanny actually has a personality in it.

Fanny gets caught in the rain and Mary undresses her.

Mostly the movie tends to annoy me because they do that thing where they conflate Fanny with Jane Austen. But the Mary/Fanny kind of makes up for it.

*adds to netflix queue*

And that other thing at the end. That was great.

Oh, wow. I'm not even a f/f fan, but this is brilliance. Now that would be a book and a half...

Mary/Fanny is my Austen OTP. Or something. I think I had pages and pages devoted to it in an old notebook somewhere. The letters.

Dude, Mary could do SO MUCH BETTER.

Most of Austen's work tends to be nicely femslashy, really; I guess it's a natural consequence of acknowledging female relationships as important.

Dude, Mary could do SO MUCH BETTER.

But does she want to?

Really, Mansfield Park is all obsession and really dry wit. It's such fun to play with.

Hi, sharing your misery. :P

I think a Masfield Park AU comm would be utterly brilliant. Just so you know. I would totally write a fic where Susan B. Anthony gets bron a few centuries earlier than she really did, and meets up with Fanny & co. Because. OMG. *punches ALL OF THE CHARACTERS IN THE FACE*

[identity profile] pearl-o.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
*giggles* I LIKE some of the characters. Just, uh. Not all of them.

[identity profile] mondschein1.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Well, okay, I like Edmund. Mr. Rushworth is an entertaining idiot.Mary Crawford was almost awesome, and then she went and just wasn't anymore. But pretty much all the women make me weep. A lot. For all their own special reasons.

[identity profile] pearl-o.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
The thing about Mary Crawford is I love her when she is actually *there*, but then she goes offstage and all we here is Fanny bitching about how awful she is. No fun!
