One of the best things about vacations in general for me is that I finally get a chance to read. I think one of the biggest adjustments that I had to make when I went to college was that I suddenly wasn't reading constantly anymore. I spent my ten years of public education averaging at least one or two dozen books a month; it was kinda a shock to go from that to moreorless no pleasure reading. And that happens again everytime I get out from school for a little bit. I don't even know how much I devoured during intersession, but it was a lot.

This week I have high hopes for pleasure reading time. Mixed in with the sleeping and working, of course.

The book I'm reading right now is technically for school, for French Film and Literature in Translation one, but I keep forgetting that as I read it, which might be a new sensation for me. It's Zazie in the Metro by Raymond Queneau (I keep having to translate the title into French in my head; for some reasons, "dans" makes more sense than "in" to me), and it's slim and weird and screamingly funny.

Next, I think will be The Shining Company, which [livejournal.com profile] carmarthen has leant me. After that, I have one of Harry Turtledove's Worldwar novels (alternate history series, with WWII getting interrupted by alien invaders), or I might go through Lloyd Alexader's Prydain Chronicles again.

The books I really want to be reading right now are parts two, three, and four of Mary Gentle's Book of Ash. I got the first part for Christmas, and it's excellent, but I had to come back to school before the library hold came in on the others. I looked for them when I went to Powell's with [livejournal.com profile] liviapenn, but they only had parts three and four, and not the second (that's a law of bookstores, I think), so I couldn't pick them up; and I haven't had any spare money since then.

In England, all four books were published as one. Hmmph.

I've also working on adding to my "Books to Read" list, mostly through various livejournals (especially [livejournal.com profile] melymbrosia's) and general wandering through Amazon. Recommendations would be incredibly welcomed in the comments, if you're so inclined. I tend towards novels, and genre fiction (mostly sf and fantasy, but to a lesser extant mystery and horror also). Older stuff would be especially appreciated, I think; I read a lot, as I said, but I know there's all sorts of brilliant stuff I've missed. And of course, good enough writing trumps all.

Off to finish Zazie, and then make myself dinner.
