So I watched Jesus Christ Superstar with [livejournal.com profile] minstrelia, [livejournal.com profile] welvilly, and [livejournal.com profile] scarletbeg0nia last night. I've heard all the songs plenty of times -- the soundtrack was one of my mother's Saturday morning cleaning albums throughout my childhood, along with Bat Out of Hell and Mary Chapin Carpenter -- but I'd never actually seen the whole movie before. But so much fun.

Notes:

+ Welvilly and Minstrelia have seen this movie millions of times, so they talked all through the movie and knew all the songs. This is less annoying than it sounds; it was actually kind of cute. It's the way I watch, say, Princess Bride or Bring It On.

+ Despite this, no matter what they say, the lepers are not sexy. At all. Freaks.

+ I have had songs stuck in my head all day. Not even whole songs. Just bits. So I'd be sitting in class, hum a little to myself, and go "Kiss me, kiss me Jesus!" Or "I don't want your blood money!" Or "This Jesus must, Jesus must, Jesus must die!" (The last in the super deep bass, natch.)

+ I could never be an apostle. I could never do the right sort of rhymthic hand flailing.

+ Freeze frames should be outlawed.

+ Man, they really played up the homoeroticism there, huh?

+ What the hell does 'jaded mandarin' mean, anyway?

+ I don't think it's possible for me to watch some of the shots at the very end without "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" starting to play in my head.

On non-Jesus notes, I just had my last class till the 21st -- I'm doing stuff for AEP day tomorrow, then leaving on Sunday to spend my spring break in Pennsylvania with my grandparents. So less computer access, but also sleep. It kinda evens out.

I wanted to do all my laundry before I left, but the bookstore was all out of detergent. Bastards. Such are the dramas that make up my life.

Ooh, and I got to watch Vegetative State and Price of Fame last night, and Turf Wars just finished downloading. Ah, Everwood, how I love you. I'm hoping to get some writing done during break, too, but we'll see.

This? Just cracked. me. up!

And now I have Herod's song in my head! Aaagh!
Prove to me that you're no fool! Walk across my swimming pool...

Life's a piece of shit,
when you at it
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true,
You'll see it's all a show,
Keep 'em laughing as you go.
Just remember that the last laugh is on you!

Mandarins were rich Chinese people (nobles, I guess), so I supposed a jaded mandarin would be, um, a jaded rich Chinese noble from a few hundred years ago. Or something.

Did you watch the old JCSS or the new one (with the fabulous Jerome Pradon as Judas)?

I was just listening to JC Superstar about an hour ago. This must be JC Superstar day. I see that LaT mentions it in her meme also. Wacky! *wink*

What have you done to me? No I have "Hosanna, Hey-sanna, sanna, sanna, Ho, sanna, Hey-sanna, Hosanna" stuck in my head. Shit.

To babysit me, Dad used to put JC Superstar or Tommy on and put the headphones on me. That or Night on Bald Mountain. Or Carmen.

Or the Sesame Street album.

But Jesus Christ Superstar was pretty much the one picked most often.

Whoo Oooh (as in trains) on the Everwood writing.
I'm always happy to see a new point of view of the boys, and/or girls. I'm not too picky. *g*

Haven't seen JCS, but "Kiss me, kiss me, Jesus!" just freaks me out.

'jaded mandarin'- um... snobby chinese folks?

BWAHAHAHAHAHA

Poor movie. It's not its fault I can't sustain the appropriate emotional tone at the end!

I did know the defition of mandarin (the non-orange kind), basically, but that still did not offer clues to what the hell it's doing in the lyrics.

Is it wacky... or is it Fandom Conspiracy?

Only the BNFs know for sure.

But you're not alone! We can have it stuck in our heads together! Doesn't that fill you with warm and fuzzy feelings?

No? Hmm.

Heh. I've vaguely afraid of jinxing myself, actually, but eh. We'll see.

And the kiss me jesus stuff makes rather more sense in context. Actually, maybe I should have specified the contextual "what the hell"ness of jaded mandarins. Hmm.

There is no jinx.
Or spoon come to think of it.

And actually, doesn't the kid in my icon look a lot like the 'no spoon' kid?
Freaky...

JCSS is a tragedy through-and-through, and I think that's part of why it was so reviled on its first release-- no resurrection, no hope. It was beautifully done and all for its it's own sake, I love that film.

But the thought of that next to the Life of Brian just caught and completely undid me. Reminded me of the whole raft of quite silly and profane cross jokes my sibling would go through "I Can see my house from here!"

I just can't think of two other sets of movies that are quite so....complementary as JCSS, and LoB. Now I'm going nuts trying to think of something.
