The other day, somewhere in between my fandom obsessing and my Anne Fausto-Sterling reading, it occured to me that the only two tv shows I've ever seen deal with intersexuality seriously (that is, not in a "look, hermaphrodite freaks!" way) are Freaks and Geeks and Everwood. Whether it's more of a taboo issue or an invisible one, I couldn't say. Are there more instances like these two?

I'm not sure this counts for your purposes since it's aliens, but in the Farscape episode Fractures, (http://www.johnskeedvabbq.com/Transcripts/FRA.html) Chiana's friend Hubero is an "androgyne," by their terminology. Chiana is surprised, but remains fast friends with Hubero.

I have a vague memory of a Chicago Hope episode where the baby was born intersexed and the doctors were explaining to the parents that they had to decide whether to raise the baby as a boy or a girl, whether to give it surgery, etc.... I don't really remember much detail, except that I remember thinking, "Wow, they handled that a lot more sensitively than I would have expected."

I'm not sure if it counts, either, but it's interesting either way.

Crossing Jordan has dealt with transsexuality, but hmm.

I suspect it's more an invisible issue than a taboo. Most people, while they might know vaguely of hermaphrodites, probably don't know anything about the range of intersexuality, or how common it (and "correction") is.

*nod* Yeah, that was what I was thinking. The two issues are always pretty tied together, thouse.
