year in writing, 2003
31/12/03 13:32I think this survey is probably more interesting to the writer than to the reader, but nonetheless, it has its appeal.
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
More, I think, since this time last year I was very much in a "woe! I am blocked! Alas!" state of mind and feeling sorry for myself, and then I stopped writing much Smallville for a while. But looking over the year, I was a lot more productive than I expected.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2003?
Um, wow. There's a lot of them. I mean, this time last year I was pretty much just a Smallville writer. In the last year, I've written in X-men, Firefly, Everwood, Sports Night, and Pirates of the Caribbean since then. Also, genre and pairingwise, I've written a lot more gen and het than last year. And the (crazy space) incest is new.
What's your favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest.
Everytime I hear this question, I change my mind and go through them all and wonder, but I always come back to my first Firefly story, Tourniquet. It's ten months later, and I can still read it and see the good things and not just the individual flaws I wish I could redo, and it still does exactly what I wanted it to.
Did you take any writing risks this year? (See above for unexpected pairings, etc.) What did you learn from them?
Doing DWNOGA, definitely. That *killed* me; I'm not entirely satisfied with the story; I doubt I'll be writing any more popslash. But, *man*, am I glad I did it.
Experimenting with first and second person was interesting; first person, especially, is really difficult, and I admire people who can make it work well. Second person has its uses, though, and I enjoyed trying it out.
I was bizarrely nervous about writing my Sports Night story, though I'm not actually sure why. And the Five Things was a lot different than what I'd written before, of course.
I do just think anytime I really stretched myself in the writing, good things came of it, even if I didn't end up satisfied with the end story.
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?
More Firefly, more Sports Night. Try Due South, after I get the season 3 dvds. Someday I will write that Lex-while-his-mother-is-dying story I've started and abandoned twice. I really want to work on longer stories, more in-depth, bigger scales and stakes, all the stuff I've been wimping out on. I really want to experiment with epistolary formats at some point, and possibly with AUs as well. Also, I should write more femslash.
