"Doggy!" the young woman says excitedly, and she drops to her knees to wrap her arms around Diefenbaker.
Fraser clears his throat. "He's a half-wolf, actually," he begins, but the young woman does not appear to be listening. She sits back, staring at Dief with a sad expression.
"This is not my doggy."
"Ah, no," Fraser says. "This is in fact my companion, Diefenbaker. And I am Constable Benton Fraser, of the Royal Canadian--"
When the young woman looks up at him, he loses his train of thought. She has one green eye and one blue, and the air around her seems *other*, almost, full of strange colors and shapes.
"Have we met before?" the young woman says.
Fraser doesn't know how to answer.
"You can call me Del," she says seriously. "Have you seen my doggy? He's not here."
Diefenbaker barks once in response, surprising Fraser. The young woman beams, and hugs Dief again, kissing his fur. "Thank you! You have a very nice doggy," she tells Fraser. "You should be careful not to misplace him."
Fraser is not as shocked as he perhaps should be when she disappears, leaving behind a vague shimmer and then nothing at all.
