Another note on my Frannie entry from the other day: one of the things that was in my head just before I wrote that the other day was seeing
cesperanza mentioning in some comment thread that she was thinking of working on a Frannie/RayK story this summer. And seeing that (besides, you know, provoking squee in me) also made me think of a conversation someone was having some time ago (last year? on #discourse? I have no memory) about Frannie/RayK as a ship, and the things that can be behind it, to support it; that is, all the thing they really have in common.
And so, okay, going back to my Frannie entry -- I think part of what I talked about there is one of those things they have in common. I think both of them do carry around that sense, all the time -- they're less smart, less educated, lower status, that sense of want, etc, etc, etc -- and a lot of the stuff they do is almost a direct response to that. It's just that the way they deal with it that's completely different. Where Frannie's working at it, working her ass off to more or less prove herself, Ray's response is closer to "Fuck you." The abrasiveness, the pretence of not caring, the dismissal of all that sort of stuff -- basically, the other choice of how to react to feeling inferior. (Which
stumbledhere and I touched on a little bit in her comments last week, talking about his anti-intellectual bias, but not much, because we were more concerned with Ray smoking weed and getting beat up in bars.)
