Brokeback Mountain: I loved it. I thought it was gorgeous, and wrenching, and possibly the loneliest movie I've ever seen. I came very close to actually crying near the end of the movie, which is something I never do on first viewing of anything; I assume this means on second and third viewings I'll be total waterworks.

I actually liked it quite a lot more than I did the short story, but I'm glad I read the story before I saw it -- not least because I don't really think someone who hadn't read it would really understand what was going on with the shirts in Jack's closet at the end. (Livia disagrees with me on this, but I know I wouldn't have made the connection, so whatever.) I thought Linda Cardellini's part was totally unnecessary and pointless, but I forgive it because it's Linda Cardellini and she was on Freaks and Geeks and also she's hot.

It's really amazing, I think, how many buttons of mine this movie hit, considering. That fight, at the end...! The scene where Jack has driven the four thousand miles after hearing about Ennis's divorce might have just broken me in half.

Now I just need a copy of the Willie Nelson song from the end credits so I can listen to it over and over and over and CRY.

Other things: Livia was 15 minutes late meeting me at my max stop last night, but like Fraser, she is crafty and distracted me with a judiciously timed "Look! Turtles!"

Birthday present! For me! Of two little tiny toy turtles! The cranky blond one is named Ray, and the resigned-looking one with the red buttons is Fraser. After experimenting, we determined we can make them smooch and sort of lean against each other in a dancing sort of way, but their shells seem to make it difficult to make them have sex or cuddle in any way. Livia says "JUST LIKE CANON."

New definition of slash fiction: deshelling to make way for CUDDLING.

Info on the soundtrack (http://www.vervemusicgroup.com/product.aspx?pid=11401&ob=bf&src=vmg) - looks like it's a new Willie Nelson song. And some other good stuff too.

Your turtles and turtle story are adorable. *g* Deshelling is the new slash.

oh gosh, darling. I did cry, which is not all that surprising. Though the funny thing is, for a bit, I really didn't think I would and then the shirt happened and omg wailing. But like what really struck me was how I cried afterwards. I was sitting in Popeye's telling my friend JC about the movie, and I couldn't keep the tears from my eyes. I really need to see it again.

So, uh, I didn't know which Willie Nelson song you were referring to, so I uploaded both of them, if you want them. *is a dork*

Yeah, the story stuck with me after I read it, but it was sadder in the thinking about than the reading. But the movie is just a huge wallow in melancholia, and I ::heart:: it so much.

The story was a little too much "And then twenty years were gone, and their entire lives were sad, petty, pathetic, pointless wastes, JUST LIKE EVERYBODY'S" for my taste, I think, which, yeah, was rather different than the wallow that the movie gave

I managed to follow the part with the shirts ok despite having not read the story (but I had seen some comment of Ang Lee's re: the shirts, so I knew to watch out for them, so possibly I am still not an unbiased viewer in that respect).

Also, I totally cried. I thought I was going to be okay, and then the screen went black and I wasn't just tearing up, I was actually crying. Which would have gone on longer if [livejournal.com profile] brooklinegirl and [livejournal.com profile] estrella30 hadn't been LAUGHING AT ME.

Awwwww. Dude, they're such bitches, aren't they? *cuddles you*

Also, it's possible I'm just dumber than other people, because I never would have been like "OH, that is Heath Ledger's shirt that Jake Gyllenhaal stole twenty years earlier and has been keeping hidden away inside his shirt from twenty years ago!" I would have thought it was just, you know, a shirt of Jake Gyllenhaal's.

I didn't think I would have gotten it without knowing, either, until they showed the blood on the sleeves. That helped.

Hi there! You probably have no earthly idea who I am, but the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] coffeeandink says you might be interested in some Carla Kelly, and I have a spare copy of Marian's Christmas Wish -- if you'd like it, I'd be happy to send it along free of charge. Carla Kelly should be shared as much as possible. :-)

I'm sure it's around somewhere, but where can I find the short story? I saw the movie first, and I'd been meaning to read it anyway, but now I really want to.

That happened to me too! I was trying to do a plot summary for a friend today and I started *sobbing.* And I cried like a baby in the theatre as well. I'm not a movie crier, so this is a bit surprising for me.

I think I got some sort of sneaking suspicion that he was going to find something in that room, and then I recognized the jacket before the shirt, and it clicked for me, seconds before they confirmed it.

Ms. Kelly is depressingly out of print too often. She's certainly my favorite of the Regency authors. A local library's used bookstore had a cart of Christmas books, and there Marian's was yesterday morning, a discard from the library's collection at some point. Toss me your address at curried_goates @ yahoo.com and I'll pop the copy in the mail post haste. *g*

possibly the loneliest movie I've ever seen

perfect description.

And I'm with Dira on the shirts: the blood on the sleeve was what tipped me off, but also, I had seen a shot of the two shirts together on some site, and that may have had something to do with it. A bunch of my guys are going to see it tonight - I'm curious as to what they'll take away from it, having no advance knowledge at all.

but their shells seem to make it difficult to make them have sex or cuddle in any way. Livia says "JUST LIKE CANON."

*giggles* That is SO AWESOME.

and see? You got to gallivant this weekend, too! We can gallivant together!

The other day, my sister was playing with them while I was on the computer, and when I looked over I saw her with the Ray turtle near her mouth and was all "Are you EATING him?" And she was all "No! I was just, um, I wanted to bite him." And then I made her put them down, since obviously she could not be trusted with turtles! So she put them down on the couch and I commented that Ray did not look very happy about this turn of events, and my sister was all "No, Ray didn't mind! But I think Fraser is pretty annoyed about it."

I didn't say this to my sister, but obviously it is because THEY ARE TURTLES IN LOVE.
