19/4/06 01:38 (UTC)Fraser minus Ma Fraser (sob!) = pony. Definitely. I agree. Somebody has to write a story wherein Ray gives Benton a pony. Or at least takes him to a dude ranch. Or where Fraser and Ray have to go undercover to a dude ranch as...dudes. Or cowboys. Hey...Brokeback Mountie (the happy-ending version)? He does need a pony. :) You are so sweet.

I'm torn.

19/4/06 02:47 (UTC)You know what, though? If Fraser can't have a pony, maybe he can just have Ray and Ray. *g*

19/4/06 11:35 (UTC)"Uh, Fraser?"
Fraser gives Dief a final, stern glare. "Just because we are in a city does not mean you can indulge in cheese fries, Dief. You do recall that we are trying to better your -- oh, why do I even bother," he mutters, as Dief sits back stubbornly and turns his nose up.
"Frase?"
"I'm sorry, Ray -- what is it?" Ray's head is poking into the barn's doorway, and the rest of him is nowhere to be seen. Fraser frowns. "Are you all right?"
Ray grins. "Fraser, I'm in my element. City boy, meet city -- kinda redundant, there, Fraser."
"Ah. So it is."
Ray's head bobs in and out of view, and there is a sound of a scuffle outside. Fraser's brows draw themselves a little closer together. "Uh, Frase, I got something for you."
"For me?" Fraser is puzzled. He can't remember needing anything, lately, aside from the essentials that they've already purchased.
"Yeah. C'mon out here, I'll show you."
Highly bemused, Fraser pushes himself to his feet and crosses the barn. Ray looks up at him almost shyly, not quite meeting his eyes, before stepping to the side to let Fraser pass. Fraser's eyes immediately track Ray's hands -- which he is holding behind his back -- and inadvertently catches a glimpse of the animal huffing unhappily at the back of Ray's head. "Ah." Fraser coughs. "It's a -- "
"Pony, yeah," Ray confirms, flashing a grin at the pony, who is now nosing at Ray's shoulder insistently. "Stubborn son of a bitch, ain'tcha?" Ray murmurs good-naturedly, and fishes a piece of carrot out of his pocket.
Fraser clears his throat. "Ah, Ray, I don't think you understand -- ponies don't have the proper build for traveling through the tundra. He can get along quite well in the city, but -- "
"Yeah, I know," Ray says absently, holding the carrot under the pony's nose. The pony snaps it up swiftly, but something without nipping any of Ray's fingers.
"You know?"
"Yeah, sure. Legs're too long and skinny, she'll sink into the snow."
Ah. She. But -- "Ray, do you mean to say that you no longer wish to travel in the dogsled?"
Ray looks up and wrinkles his forehead. "Huh? Why wouldn't I?"
"Well, you've bought us a mode of transport that is obviously unsuitable for the tundra -- "
"Oh." Ray's face clears abruptly. "Fraser -- "
" -- and if you hadn't realized it may only have been a thoughtless error, but -- "

19/4/06 11:36 (UTC)"Fraser." Fraser clamps his mouth shut. "She's not for riding. I mean, yeah, she can, but -- " Ray rubs the pony's nose gently, and the pony nuzzles his chin. "I sort of saw her, and she reminded me of -- " Ray stops to shoot a suspicious look at Fraser. "Don't laugh, 'kay?"
"I won't," Fraser promises.
"Okay." Ray turns his attention back to the pony, stroking her ears with his fingertips. "She just reminded me of you, okay? Kinda snarky before you feed her, and then real sweet when you do, and those big eyes -- " Ray shrugs. "I dunno, I just thought you might get along."
Fraser blinks at Ray uncomprehendingly. "So you bought her?"
"Yeah. Why not?"
Why not? There's nearly a thousand reasons why not. "Where are we going to put her? She can't come with us, the terrain will be too stressful on her knees -- "
"Hey, relax, I've taken care of it. The guy promised he'd keep her for us for a while, gave me his number and everything." Ray gives Fraser an uncertain half-smile. "I thought you might wanna see her before we left, though."
Fraser shakes his head. "Ray -- "
"Frase. C'mon. Trust me." Ray takes a step toward him, and the pony follows Ray obediently. Her hoof makes a muffled thump on the hay. "Here." Ray holds a carrot out to Fraser. "She'll love ya forever if you feed her carrots, seriously. Easiest girl I ever got."
Feeling like he's lost thirty years somwhere along the line, Fraser takes the carrot. Immediately, the pony's eyes roll towards him, and she swings her head over to him hopefully. With one practiced hand, Fraser holds the carrot steady for her and pats her neck firmly with the other.
"Hey, see, what'd I tell you?" Fraser glances up at Ray, who is looking enormously pleased with himself. "She likes you. Told you she would."
"Indeed." The pony finishes gobbling the carrot and, as she chews, entertains herself with Fraser's hat. She sniffs it twice, then snorts moistly on it and bumps it off of Fraser's head. "Oh, dear," Fraser says, and bends over to pick his hat up.
As soon as it's back on his head, though, the pony bumps it right back off again. Ray hoots. "She's fooling with ya! Damn pony doesn't know any better. Hey -- "
Fraser sees the glint in Ray's eye a second too late, and then he reduced to hanging onto his hat with both hands while Ray and the pony swipe at it. In the end, Ray rolls them down a hill inadvertently, leaving the pony stamping indecisively at the top.
Fraser looks up at Ray, who's still grinning broadly. "Thank you, Ray."
Ray's grin widens. "Hey, anytime," he says -- and then he swipes Fraser's hat away and runs off with it, whooping loudly all the way into the barn.
