Earlier [livejournal.com profile] speshope and I went to see Eight Below at the $1.50 movie theater. Cute puppies + polar regions = ERICA JOY, yay.

Right now I am rewatching part of Buffy, season 1. This is notable for three reasons:

1) Rewatching BtVS always makes me ship Buffy/Giles like crazy, but in a really complicated, half-gen, directly-connected-to-my-id way that I cannot actually explain, and which rules out 99.8% of B/G fic for me.

2) Sarah Michelle Gellar looks so good season 1, people. She's all CURVY. Her rack! Her thighs in those miniskirts! Man.

3) You know, within the context of the Buffyverse, and considering Buffy's weird social position in the high school, I am kind of surprised there were never any malicious rumors going around about her and Giles. I mean, without the real story, she's just the sketchy girl who spends way too much time and seems weirdly close to the faculty member in his 30s. She's totally the type who'd get that.

I'm quite surprised they never touched on that myself, the "hot for the librarian underage badgirl"

Hahaha, no way was Giles in his 30s! He was at least in his 40s when the series started. Which, maybe that accounts for some of it. The older someone is, the less likely kids are to think of them in any kind of sexual terms.

I'm totally with you on the whole Buffy/Giles problem. Like, I can understand why the show didn't go there with the rumors, but I think you're right -- in a real high school, it would be widely assumed that they had something going on. I've not read that fic, and I would like to. Because that's the kind of Buffy/Giles that would be plausible to me: one that dealt with the pairing in its uncomfortable glory but didn't make a big deal out of being the ooh scary darkfic. This is, of course, too much to ask of fandom.

I am, as most people are unaware, having a sort of Giles renaissance, so who knows what will happen, there.

Ah, Giles. ::flitters off for a moment::

I'm actually glad they didn't go that route at that point -- it would have tilted Giles out of the narrative position he needed to occupy, at least for the first three seasons, as the still center around which all the Scoobys and demons and whatnot revolved. And his character was painted as too chivalrous (I might say even painted too broadly) to lust after the person he was born to guide and protect, "even in his heart" *G*. The character wasn't complex enough for them to handle that kind of storyline seriously, even within a demonic metaphor, and doing it for comedy...well, I could see why that wouldn't be on the cards.

Myself, I liked the show officially saying that not all is perversion, that a grown man and a young girl could develop their own rules for friendship -- particularly a girl who missed her father and a family man who never got his own family to love.

OTOH, *after* high school, when he's no longer officially her Watcher, and she's no longer a child...And the show was darker, and Giles was more fully developed as a character, and Buffy didn't need a Protector anymore... Now for me, that's where I can go with the idea that Other Things might come into play, though it's still not my taste in reading matter.

(Thanks for letting me span your LJ -- I'm in the middle of rewatching BtVS as well!)

I'm not necessarily surprised they didn't go there in the show, but in the fic, you would think.

Giles renaissance, huzzah! I, too, would really like to see that explored in fic, by a writer I trusted -- that would definitely be in my 0.2% of joy.

Oh, fandom. Why do you continually fail to read my mind and produce on demand?

1 - I thought the exact same thing. And that vibe totally went away for me in the later seasons somehow.

2 - Oh my yes!!! Sarah before all the crazy weight loss was amazing.

3 - Yes, I could totally see some kind of horrible rumor.

Wow, it's like you completely tuned into my season one thoughts. Any Buffy/Giles recs?
