Lyrics meme, for fun and prizes!

Guessing the artist on some of these is pretty much impossible -- so if you do, that's extra super duper credits! Woot.

1. Nothing ain't worth nothing but it's free, "Me and Bobby McGee," Kris Kristofferson
2. My pappy was a pistol, I'm a son of a gun, "Dang Me," Roger Miller
3. He stabbed her through the heart and her heart's blood it did flow, "Pretty Polly," Kristin Hersh
4. But they all agreed that the slayer who ran looked a lot like me, "Long Black Veil," Nick Cave
5. They took all the trees, put them in a tree museum, "Big Yellow Taxi," Joni Mitchell
6. It's well we sing bonny boys, bonny mad boys, "Mad Tom of Bedlam," Jolie Holland
7. I'm free from the walls of this prison at last, but I'll never be free from my sins of the past, "Poor Ellen Smith," Neko Case
8. But I would not feel so all alone, everybody must get stoned, "Rainy Day Women #12 and 35," Bob Dylan
9. I would ask him, I would ask him, why he let me love in vain
10. No I never got over those blue eyes, I see them everywhere, "I Still Miss Someone," Emmylou Harris

6 is -- hm, I've got two different versions with similar, but distinct titles. It's an English folk song about crazy people; I've got a version by Jolie Holland called "Mad Tom of Bedlam", and one by Steeleye Span called "Boys of Bedlam". The Jolie Holland one, incidentally, is kind of the perfect Drusilla song. I know I've heard 8 before, but I don't know title or artist, so whatever.

1. Janis Joplin, Me and Bobby McGee. I think.
3. Is some traditional folk song, maybe Joan Baez?
5. Is Joni Mitchell, it's from a song on Ladies of the Canyon, and it's killing me that I can't remember what the title is, but it's the one where the chorus is "They paved paradise, put up a parking lot."
8. Is Everybody Must Get Stoned, and I'm guessing maybe you're talking about a cover, although I'm not sure which 70s band did the original right now.

Actually, maybe all of these are covers, which will definitely make the guessing harder.

#4 and #10 are Johnny Cash for sure: "The Long Black Veil" and "I Still Miss Someone". But that's all I know.

Big Yellow Taxi!

Sadly, that's the only one I know. Woe.

1. Nothing ain't worth nothing but it's free

"Me and Bobby McGee" but guessing which version is tough. My favorites are Joplin's and Kristofferson's, for what that's worth.

4. But they all agreed that the slayer who ran looked a lot like me

"Long Black Veil". Again, covered by everybody under the sun.

5. They took all the trees, put them in a tree museum

"Big Yellow Taxi". I like both the Joni Mitchell and the Counting Crows versions.

6. It's well we sing bonny boys, bonny mad boys

"Bedlam Boys"; I know it from Steeleye Span, but I don't know if anybody else has done it.

8. But I would not feel so all alone, everybody must get stoned

This is a trick question, right? Bob Dylan, of course... and I have a vague recollection that "Everybody Must Get Stoned" isn't the real title... but I'm damned if I can come up with the correct name. Argh.

10. No I never got over those blue eyes, I see them everywhere

"I Still Miss Someone" by... Emmylou Harris? Not sure.

Heh. 1 is Me and Bobby McGee, but not Janis Joplin -- actually, I'm pretty sure the one I was listening to was the original. 5 is Joni Mitchell. You're close but not quite on with the other two.

Yay! Strangely enough, neither of those were the Johnny Cash versions -- but that's because I have 6 "Long Black Veil"s and 3 "I Still Miss Someone"s.

I have heard the Steeleye Span -- mine was "Mad Tom of Bedlam" from Jolie Holland. And it was indeed Emmylou Harris's version of "I Still Miss Someone."

Here you go: Boys of Bedlam (http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=E66EFA46230187E6) by Steeleye Span

(Good for 14 days or 200 downloads, so anyone who wants it is welcome to snag it.)

I'm still impressed with how fast people were! I clicked on "reply" when there were no comments on this post yet, and by the time I finished and submitted, almost everything I knew had already been guessed. Zowie.

There's some sort of number in the title of #8, isn't there? Like, Rainy Day Women #9 and #14 or some such?

I couldn't remember the title. Just that it had numbers in it. I peaked at other people's answers.

I just remember how my friends and I, who'd never done a drug in our life, used to sing it at the top of our lungs in Middle School.

Ack, I can't remember the name of the song but it's Bob Dylan. I love that track, with all the laughing in the background.

I also have Kristin Hersh's version -- I'm kind of in love with her Murder, Misery and Goodnight album, which is one of the reasons I started going crazy with m y weird country/folk/traditional depressing songs playlist.
