Well. This is the thing: I've heard people say their iPods do this, but mine never has. Ever. So...I can't guarantee it won't happen, because i have no experience with it! :(
On the apple website, it says you can turn off automatic updating:
1. Connect iPod to your computer 2. Open iTunes. 3. Select iPod in the iTunes source list. 4. Click the Options button. 5. Select "Manually manage songs and playlists.
I hope it works! I will feel terrible if you lose all your music!
