Wendy Watson, Starfleet cadet. DISCUSS. AND POSSIBLY WRITE AND/OR MANIP.

Also tonight on my commute home I watched City on the Edge of Forever, but I don't have anything to say about that other than wow, that was just as good as everyone promised me! (Also lol Kirk baiting Spock and being bad at improv.)

Unfortunately my newsletter features way more articles on "Damn you, public transportation" and "work is boring" than it does actual content.

Once they had Majel as the computer all the time, they mention how they got this new computer voice, and it's being all mean and snarky, and it's actually dangerous for about half the episode when it goes crazy. But now I want the Enterprise to sound like Ida, and call Kirk a pothead. *snicker*

CRYOGENICALLY FROZEN, SEZ I.

Kirk would be all "Y HELLO THAR" and Wendy would be all "Busy. Saving. Universe. Go stand over there. I mean it. Now, mister." and then she'd be all "WHY ARE THERE ALWAYS TENTACLES? SERIOUSLY. THE HELL?" and then she'd go play Gut Wrencher XXI with Scotty and Chekov. And Kirk would be "But... I'm Captain Awesome," and the Middleman would just manfully clap his shoulder and give him milk, and tell him clean living is the way to go. And then Ida will show up as a space ship and they'll go zoom off to FIGHT FUTUREISTIC EVIL.

People are sent to see Noser, crying, and come out smiling going "I DIDN'T STUMP THE BAND AND IT WAS AWESOME!"

he gets his guitar aboard by listing it as theraputic equipment

YES! Tyler is the one sane redshirt. He beams down with all the other redshirt and goes "Uh, guys, I wouldn't wander off to that interesting-yet-ominous area until we've cleared...oh."

And then he'd beam up alone, shaking his head. He and Noser have deep moments of zen together when WW and Lacey (WHERE IS LACEY? BIOSCI?) are having galpal time

Oh, I can't write Star Trek until I've seen all of TOS, and all the movies, and read some of the key novels, and maybe important spin-off episodes, and maybe read some fic first, and then it'd be nice to have the movie on DVD first...

Actually, I think the original draft Ellison wrote was vastly different from what was actually filmed (partly becasue when it was originally pitched, he didn't know anything about the characters beyond the basic details). Dorothy Fontana re-wrote to make it work for Star Trek and the characters (since it aired late in s1 I think). In the original Kirk wants to let Edith Keeler live even tho it would destroy the timeline. In the aired ep, he has to let her die even tho he loves her. I actually like the aired version better. But I haven't read the original draft--I just remember hearing about it at cons. I think it's been published since, tho.

actually, that is not true. it was not VASTLY different, just more complicated

in the original ep as written by harlan, kirk still knows he has to let edith die. in the original, instead of mccoy injection himself and fleeing in a panic, the crew of the enterprise is chasing a criminal, and HE flees through the time portal, changing everything.

after that, the original and the aired ep are pretty much the same, with kirk still falling for edith. however, there is more emphasis on the spying on edith, waiting for the criminal, than the actual love story, although that is shown as well. at the end of the original, the CRIMINAL tries to save edith, (rather than bones) and spock tackles him, while kirk remains frozen, via love vs duty. rather than saying "he knows, doctor, he knows" (as in the aired ep) spock instead says (in the original) "no other woman was ever offered the universe for love."

the ep as aired won a hugo, but the original script itself won a writer's guild of america award, so they were both excellent.

trek et als problem with the original was that it had too many speaking parts and would be too expensive, and also that the criminal was also a (redshirt) memeber of the crew, and it didn't seem to fit the trek philosophy.

harlan's problem with the rewrites were (1) he's a touchy bitch who doesn't like people messing with his stuff, and (2) trek made edith a full out war protester, rather than just hippy-ish, this implying that anti-war movements were a threat to humanity, something which harlan would naturally have a problem being associated with during the vietnam era.

haralan DID write a book about the whole thing:
http://www.amazon.com/City-Edge-Forever-Original-Teleplay/dp/1565049640

which is TOTALLY worth reading to see the different versions of the scripts, but mostly because NOBODY holds a grudge like harlan, and his angry ANGRY intro is the best vitriol i have read in a long time. ANGRY HARLAN IS ANGRY YO

*cough* i'm just saying. it's not like i've read everything he's ever written, and OWN everything he's ever written, and met him several times and maybe wrote a paper or so on him and his writing or anything like that. *g*
