I can't stop thinking about the Pete and Mikey tweets. The two of them meeting up in Europe this week, and all the ways it contrasts with the Summer of Like. Because that was summer, it was all sun and dust and heat and this endless American roadtrip, and this is everything that wasn't, right? Cold autumny grayness in a foreign city, just long enough to meet up before they have to separate again. And it's been five years since the Summer of Like, you guys. They're both so much older than they were before - not just in years, but in life, because so much has happened since then. They have families and crap! They're both in their 30s.

I bet, as much as Pete still digs Mikey, he still misses what he can't help thinking of as his Mikey. This dude is a cool guy and a hot-ass and he's a million times happier than he ever could have been in '05, but he still has the memories of the two of curled up in a bunk with an ipod, whispering secrets to each other about their fucked up brains; the way Mikey's eyes would lose focus, look a little lost before settling in on Pete's face again, when Pete took off his glasses to get them out of the way so he could kiss him.

PEARL. THIS. It's like you reached into my brain and pulled out exactly what I've been thinking. Because it IS so different--the wrong season, the wrong side of the pond--and they're both older and wiser and so much happier in so many ways. And it's amazing to see, from both sides.

But that summer was so intense, you know? Like, they were all over the map (literally) and with their respective bands and doing band things and whatnot, but it felt--and still feels, in retrospect--so INSULAR. The clearest memories of those months, of that tour, are still of each other.

I think Pete still misses Mikey's glasses. I think Pete misses that moment after he'd take them off, where Mikey would squint and blink and press his fingers in, wherever they were settled, like he was making sure Pete was still there.

Yes, definitely! Pete just ... misses, even though there's no reason to, you know? He misses that feeling and that need. He likes this happy, non-fucked-up Mikey, but, I meam, it's Pete; there's always going to be a little jealousy he wasn't the one who got him this way.

But you know, it's a feeling he knows to keep in the back of his brain where it belongs. Because he's still glad they have what they have now.
