schmerica: (other: books)
I have been working on The Hidden Heart by Laura Kinsale ever since I finished The Game of Kings, and even though I've loved everything else I've read of her work, this book is taking me forever. I simply cannot read too much of a time, because it is DRIVING ME INSANE. Seriously. It's not that the heroine and hero aren't likable; it's that every action they take is SO INCREDIBLY RETARDED OMIGOD.

Seriously, this is the plot to date )

But, you know, that's always the danger of going back to first novels, right?

I need more books. I have nothing left after I finish this one! The library system website isn't working right, either; I can't make it let me reserve books online. MY WORLD IS ALL ASKEW. I do not know what to do without that convenience!

...I think everyone in the world should go download this song: Hip-Hop Hoodios, "Havana Nagila". Latino-Jewish hip-hop! "I'm a Jew for Allah, a Jew for Jesus, a Jew for milagros and telekinesis!"

I, uh. I can't stop listening to it. I DON'T KNOW WHY.

Every once in a while my brain spits up the kind of ridiculously wrongheaded, inappropriate and just plain BAD vid ideas that makes me really truly grateful I have neither the talent, patient, capability nor inclination to ever vid.

I mean, seriously. Just because I like poppy girly rock doesn't mean it's appropriate for Fraser/RayK (Sleater-Kinney's "OH!"), or Rodney McKay (Josie & the Pussycats, "Pretend to Be Nice"!), or god forbid, Brokeback Mountain (Look, the Letters to Cleo cover of "I Want You to Want Me" is really catchy, okay? And there crying! And a shirt! STOP JUDGING ME ALREADY I HATE YOU).

Rachel McAdams is totally a mean bitchy hor of the first order in The Family Stone. SHE HAS NEVER BEEN HOTTER.

The movie is not good, but I liked it anyway enough that I will probably get in on dvd and watch it every year, skipping all the bits with Dermot Mulroney and Claire Danes. Also, somehow, despite being completely different from my family in pretty much every single particular, the way they run entirely on close-knittedness, elaborate in-jokes and constant mockery is probably the closest I have ever seen any on-screen family come to the way my family works. Heh.

Okay, two things.

First, I have now promised my first child to Slodwick, because HOLY CRAP. Do you SEE that? I am a lucky lucky girl.

The second thing is this book, which -- SERIOUSLY, PEOPLE. Please tell me one of you has read this -- or better yet, OWNS it! I need to know these things! I need excerpts (horrible ones preferred, but all kinds welcomed)! MY CURIOSITY IS NOW AROUSED.
