A quick question in #discourse this evening seemed to find us all divided or uncertain, so I put up a due South question to found out the hearts and opinions of you all.

[Poll #323876]

In one episode, Dief doesn't move to the backseat and Fraser yells at him, and then apologizes later because Bob was in the backseat (and therefore, Dief was either unable or unwilling to move). Maybe it was the Guy Rankin episode? I don't remember exactly. But it seems to me that Dief is, indeed, aware of Bob.

I ticked "maybe". Dief doesn't usually show signs of noticing dear old dead Bob, but you never know with him. After all, Bob can't give him food, which might be a good reason to simply ignore him!

But if you subscribe to the theory that Dief is supposed to represent Fraser's ego and if you say that he can't see Bob, it gets pretty interesting...

Dogs think with their noses, and Bob may not have a smell or have a very faint ghostly one. And since Dief is deaf, there's only one sense that is going to intrigue him. So you could sell me on Dief interacting with Bob, or Dief being totally oblivious, whatever the plot needs.

I think Dief can and does pay as much attention to Bob as he does to Fraser ... which is to say when he feels like it.
