schmerica: (polly perkins)
[personal profile] schmerica
First, new icon from [livejournal.com profile] liviapenn. Yay!

(Although it raises the question of how I have two Gwyneth Paltrow icons without, you know, actually liking Gwyneth Paltrow.)

Second, pointless meme, stolen from [livejournal.com profile] brooklinegirl and [livejournal.com profile] katemonkey, among others. I did skip one of the questions, though, because I couldn't figure out the difference between Core Personality and Character.

Five Things You May Not Know About My Time in School are:

1. Starting with kindergarten and ending at my present day college, I have attended nine different schools.

2. In January this will increase to 10.

3. My teacher in first grade identified me as gifted, but decided I wasn't ready for the program for gifted students because I wasn't social enough.

4. I had a tendency to adore my teachers madly -- or alternatively, felt indifference to them. The one teacher I ever really hated was my 10th grade English teacher, and I still can't say his name without following it up with "oh my GOD I hated him SO MUCH!"

5. In my two years at high school, I participated in Drama Club, several plays, Speech and Debate Team, the school's anti-prejudice organization, National Honor Society, and the school newspaper.

Five Things You May Not Know About the Job (Jobs) I Have (or Had) are:

1. When I was sixteen I spent the summer temping at my mother's work doing data entry; it was a quite good job, except for the fact that they had me working 40 hours a week with only about 20 hours of work to do.

2. The summer I was eighteen I ended up working a game booth at the county fair. I worked the game where you throw dimes into the booth, and if you land in a piece of glass you get to take it home. I have never in my life had sorer foot or dirtier hands than the end of the night those days.

3. Despite being fairly polite, intelligent and hardworking, I still found it impossible to find any sort of basic minimum wage job for well over year (nor do I have high expectations for this quarter).

4. My last job was temping at a credit reporting agency. My unit worked between the credit bureaus and mortgage companies to correct people's credit fast so the mortgage companies could get their loans done.

5. While I complained about it kind of a lot, I really did enjoy my job this summer -- I think I miss the feeling of being objectively incredibly competent.

Five Things You May Not Know About My Online Life are:

1. The name "Pearl-o" has no meaning; it was simply the first random thing that popped into my head when I signed up for my diaryland account.

2. I was a dedicated lurker at Hissyfit, Mighty Big TV, and Fametracker for throughout high school.

3. The first time I encountered fanfiction was at dymphna.net, following [livejournal.com profile] katemonkey's user info at those sites.

4. I get really twitchy when I am forced to go too long without checking my email.

5. Every once in a while I have a slight freak-out about boundaries and the fact that I'm wasting my life and none of this is real and that I have no idea how I come across at all to people. These aren't very frequent, though, and don't usual last at all.

Five Things You May Not Know About Where I Live are:

1. I desperately miss being on the East Coast, and I plan on heading back out that way as soon as I finish my undergraduate studies.

2. The thing I love most about here is the weather; I am never in a better mood than when it is gray and rainy and moody out.

3. The downtown of the town I live in consists of a highway, many gas stations, some convenience stores, a few grocery stores and a Starbuck's.

4. My parents started working on fixing up our house when we moved in 1997. I don't imagine they will ever actually finish. Right now they're building a new garage, and the wall in the living room might actually get finished one of these days.

5. I am ridiculously in love with my new dorm room. It's cozy and sweet and little, and I sort of want to stay it forever like a cocoon.

Five Things You May Not Know About My Core Personality are:

1. I am very passive aggressive, and work on a not-particularly-subtle guilt-based subtle, gained from my mother.

2. I am fairly quiet and reserved with new people. This is mostly shyness, I think, but there might also be an element to it that is a sort of laziness -- "I already *know* lots of people; I don't feel up to starting at scratch again with you."

3. I am not especially neat, but very few things make me happy like the feeling of organization. Spreadsheets of books and cds, carefully arranged collections, and keeping my lj friends list divisble by five all make things feel right in the world.

4. When I reach a certain point of friendship with someone, I become incredibly, incredibly loyal. (Which may or may not make up for the ways in which I'm not so great a friend.)

5. I am really bad at accepting gifts. I always manage to be really really grateful and yet really *guilty* feeling at the same time. At times this makes it hard for me to ask for things I do need.

Five Things You May Not Know About My Home Life are:

1. I think most of my frustrations with my father are based on the fact that he can't tell the difference between the person I am now and the person I was before I went off to college.

2. My family shows affection and bonding most strongly through merciless and constant teasing.

3. Everyone in my family except my sister and I are -- though smart, kind and lovely people -- crazy right wingers. This is one of the reasons I feel so uncomfortable in most current day political discussions.

4. My parents wander towards overprotectiveness. However, this is balanced by the fact that they're not especially vigilant or observant.

5. I think my mother, especially, is really happy to have me so close to home, but I appreciated everybody much much more from 3000 miles away.

Five Things You May Not Know that I Desperately Want are:

1. A master's degree in library science.

2. To get back to the weight I was two years ago so I can wear all my old clothes.

3. To go to Europe.

4. To learn to stop procrastinating.

5. To get over all my stupid insecurities.

Five Embarrassing Fannish Admissions I Have That You May Not Know are:

1. I read pretty much everything Clark/Lex posted in Smallville close to two years, regardless of quality, and can still identify a freaking lot of them very very easily.

2. I have a private section in my memories labeled "recs", where I have every lj entry I've seen with people saying nice things about my stories.

3. I read something like the first 150 or 200 chapters of one particularly memorable Smallville badfic, along with a couple dozen stories in another Smallville series; along with jess and a couple of other sv people, we used to squeal and pounce on each other when the new stuff came out and run to read it and giggle together.

4. Quite a bit of my early SV stories are unbeta'd, underage virgin stuff. Just to, you know, name three different things to scare people away!

5. For several years I was completely convinced that HP, really, was just the fandom that didn't hold any interest for me. Nothing against it -- it just wasn't my thing. And then during the summer I was flipping through the TV and came across Sorcerer's Stone on ABC, and the HP kids talking about Prisoner of Azkaban. Fucking Rupert Grint.

Five Things You May Not Know About What I Do in a Typical Day are:

1. Tell myself and make a concentrated effort to eat breakfast, and then skip it anyway.

2. Check my email and friends list an obscene number of times.

3. Have an actual argument with myself to keep from spending money on food, clothes, books, cds, dvds, and all the other goods I covet.

4. Brush my hair a *lot*. Though it doesn't especially seem to make a difference.

5. Talk to [livejournal.com profile] fox1013 on AIM.
