A. I have already mentioned, in a previous entry, that the word for "how" in Russian is approximately "KAK", and thus pronounced similarly to "cock." You can imagine the amusement as I practice my vocabulary.

B. The word for "juice" is approximately "COK". The C is an "s" sound, and the O is longer, so it doesn't sound even vaguely similar. But still.

C. Today the professor started to try and explain to us the complexities of soft and hard consonants. One of the points she made had to do with what kind of vowels came after which categories of consonants -- which vowels, in fact, worked to "preserve the hardness" of the preceding consonants. She did in fact use this phrase several times. I did not giggle at any of them.

D. [livejournal.com profile] lyra_sena, I hate you. So much.

Also, on a note that is neither Russian nor dirty -- can anyone confirm or deny the connection between the phrase "I'm like Jesus, in a way" and the big Firefly vid kerfuffle? Because I was talking with [livejournal.com profile] tzikeh earlier, and she had no idea what I was talking about, and I find myself completely unable to bring up anything through google or selected ljs. Am I making this up or getting things confused?

ETA: Okay, [livejournal.com profile] geekturnedvamp helped me find the post in question -- it's about halfway down the page, here.

Succotash: How am I being selfish? What do I get out of it? I am PAYING for the bandwidth. It's a gift, I'm like Jesus, in a way. You remind me of Satan's little midget helper.

Yay for me not being insane!

for me, like jesus in a way originates with ms a and elijah wood. but it then, naturally, was in fandom_wank, and so could easily play into the firefly vid kerfluffle, about which i know absolutely nothing :)

Heh, see, I know nothing about the ms a stuff. But the "Jesus, in a way" thing is really so amazingly classic it deserves to be quoted in all contexts, really.

Which Firefly vid kerfuffle? I mean, I only know of the one so I'm assuming we're thinking of the same thing (not necessarily a safe assumption, but if it was some other incident I would have no idea what went down either), but I think it mostly took place on fireflyfans.net or one of the bulletin boards and some of the posts I read venting about it might have been friendslocked, both of which might explain why you're having no luck with your search... However, my theory is that what's really confusing you is [livejournal.com profile] tzikeh not knowing about it, because I kind of expect her to know everything.

Yeah, the big one with the cd, and then the hosting of Nia's and other people's vids without their permission and everything. I've found a bunch of the entries on the kerfuffle itself, looking at Nia's and a couple other journals, but I can't find any of the stuff about "I'm like Jesus, in a way", which is what I was looking for, specifically.

Sorry I didn't see this post earlier...

*waves a virtual twinkie in remembrance*

I actually have a memories category (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=elke_tanzer&keyword=summary+of+Firefly+vid+kerfuffles&filter=all) for the post where I linked to all of this craziness in Firefly vid fandom. I was trying to give an overview of it for another vidder who was learning that clip theft is a bad thing.

Oh, man. What's really sad here is that I actually went and checked your memories as one of the first things I did to try and look for this. I apparently had the research skills of a gnat last night.

You know, I think there was a confluence of Christian-related frothing linked to from fandom_wank around then, too. By July (http://www.journalfen.net/community/fwank_icons/2268.html), the phrase was in common enough use to be an understandable reference in an icon. Hrm.

From my LJ entries of 4/19-23/2003, there should be entries in fandom_wank, and possibly fandom_lounge and fandom_rant, for that time period... where lots of folks were jumping all over the "like Jesus, in a way" joke with clever text and icons, and I vaguely remember them, but I just can't locate them right now. Very odd.

Bah. I must be losing my mind. Or at least bits of my auxilliary brain. :-P

And there's an instance of the phrase in May (http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_wank/54738.html), too.

Never mind, I found it--go here (http://www.fireflyfan.net/thread.asp?b=13&t=1837) and scroll down to the entry from Nia on Friday, April 18, 2003 - 20:02. (And it occurs to me I probably shouldn't be rereading this thread right after the debate with like, no chocolate or anything in the house because this is a stressful time, but this just reminded me that I love Nia so much).

and, see, had I been home and reading my LJ tonight, instead of out reading a book in a crowded coffee shop until 3am? I coulda told you too...

Poor Haken. His board gets all the whack jobs. But Succatash and that other guy? I still get the occasional "anonymous" hatemail from one of them (I can't recall offhand which one since it's been a year) for daring to email Nia and tell her what was going on with her vid.

Oi.

Wait until the teacher wants to see your tongue while you attempt to pronounce the difference between a hard and soft L.

It's wrong, wrong, wrong. (and I still can't do it.)

Hee. Man, I get the feeling that the hard-and-soft bits are going to hurt my brain rather a lot. Especially when in the introduction she's going "Listen to these two words, and you can hear the difference" and then they sound *exactly the same*.

After two years of college-level Russian, I can hear the difference, but I couldn't pronounce the difference if you put a gun to my head.

I could never roll my Rs, either.

allowing, of course, for shrinkage caused by pickling...

Oh, my. Here I was thinking the pickling did something to enlarge his appendage. That in no way can be comfortable, can it?
