He has to wonder if he's the only one that sees it, sometimes. When Clark went to college, Lex was certain that he'd lose Clark to the heady attractions of co-eds. Lex forgets sometimes that the way he was isn't anything remotely like the way Clark is. It's a hard lesson that he keeps relearning.

When he and Clark walk on campus, or go out in Metropolis, he catalogues each look and glance as if they will total up to something important. They never do, of course, and Lex feels like a fool for doubting himself and Clark. Clark is intensely loyal, as if his devotion to Lex is written in the fabric of his skin. His smiles, the creases in his eyes, the smooth palms of his hands--all these map out Clark's emotions on Lex, and Lex would curse himself for his doubt if it didn't recur so often.

Some part of him is always waiting for Clark to notice the looks. Lex is waiting for Clark to leave.
