due south recs
26/12/04 11:51I'm still working on amassing more yuletide recs, but in the meantime, let us not overlook the wonder of
ds_seekritsanta. Mmmmmmmmmm. *hugs the entire lj close to heart*
Pretty much everything I've read has been quite good (yay for my fandom) but my favorites are behind the cut tag.
The First Time Frannie Met Ray Kowalski (RayK/Frannie)
http://www.livejournal.com/users/ds_seekritsanta/2714.html
Tony drove her and Maria to the precinct the next day and they waited in a small interrogation room for twenty minutes before the door opened and the officer from the night before walked in. Frannie took a deep breath and willed herself not to cry, and then the door opened one more time and her new brother walked in the room.
He was skinny and blond and wearing a pair of thick glasses. He had on a sports jacket over a Chicago Bulls t-shirt, and was wearing a pair of old, scuffed motorcycle boots. He walked over to Tony and shook his hand, flashing a grin and nodding energetically.
Frannie hated him on sight.
My story! All mine! Mmmmm, Frannie.
Sibylla ti theleis (RayV/Stella)
http://www.livejournal.com/users/ds_seekritsanta/10051.html
Later that night, over a candlelight dinner at an Italian dive where the owner was the granddaughter of Ray's fourth-grade teacher, he asked her what she had really wanted to do with her life, if she'd been able to do whatever she wanted.
Stella raised her eyebrows and looked at him oddly, as if she couldn't believe he didn't know already. "Well, I wanted to be a cop, obviously," she said, and then she smiled, wry and giddy and beautiful.
"Oh, yeah," he said, because it was kind of obvious, once he stopped to think about it.
This story really is as amazingly good as everyone is saying. I almost want to beg or push all of you into going and reading it.
Twelve Ways of Making Ray More Canadian (F/K)

This is artwork rather than a story -- gorgeous, clever, funny. Twelve days of Christmas for Fraser and Ray.

December 11, 1948
Dear Tiff,
It’s December 11th, which means I’ve been in Toronto for something like eighty years. All right, two days, actually. But it seems longer.
Lovely structure that slowly unfolds, and a very nice post-CotW Ray and Fraser.
Momentous (F/K)
http://www.livejournal.com/users/ds_seekritsanta/6890.html
Fraser shook his head quickly. No, he couldn’t think about that now. It was a momentary madness, too much eggnog. Fraser looked at the amorphous lump under the bedspread. Only one long, outstretched arm and a fierce tuft of blond hair were visible. Ray hadn’t even moved. Perhaps he could leave unnoticed.
Fraser looked around the room for his boxers. Ah, over the lamp.
Morning after story, yay! Another nice structure, this time interwoven with flashbacks to the events of the night before. Very well written.
Rain Down on Me (F/K)
http://www.livejournal.com/users/ds_seekritsanta/5346.html
"God, I fucking *hate* rain."
Fraser looked up from his book. "Ray, please," he said.
"What?"
Fraser looked pointedly over at where Dief was sleeping in front of the fireplace.
"Fraser, he's deaf, he's sleeping, and he is *not* picking up bad language from me."
"Well, I don't know where he's getting it, then."
Some very good lines here, and just a pleasurable read.
Rogue (Gen, Fraser)
http://www.livejournal.com/users/ds_seekritsanta/5884.html
The 27th is never dark, and even at 3 a.m. is often busy, but that night the atmosphere held an unusual charge of tension, and the two dark-suited hard-eyed men in the hallway were not the usual late-night habitues. Strangers though they were, I knew their type, and walked past them with a bare nod, toward interrogation room number three.
Lieutenant Welsh stood outside the door, leaning against the wall, hands in his pockets. From the set of his face, I knew even before I spoke the answer to my question, the one that had had been left hanging when I departed to accompany Ray to Ms. Botrelle's house. "We still have a problem, I take it?"
I really hope this story doesn't get overlooked as, you know, the gen story among all the exciting het and slash, because it really is incredibly good.
