Quoting from [livejournal.com profile] stumbledhere from in this entry: Okay. On the note of my conversation with SK about "End of the Road", I continued my email to her by telling her that the other night I made a list of my favorite dS fic moments. Not my favorite fics, or the ones I read all the time, but just the moments that I replay in my head sometimes when I am sitting on the subway or driving for a long time or stopped at a red light or staring at the ceiling in my bedroom.

So anna wants us *all* to make our lists, too, and give them to her. So I did that, because I am a pushover.

These are basically the first ten or so crystal-clear moments that popped into my head when I closed my eyes to think this meme over; I'm sure the exact list would change at any other given time. Also, I put the authors into alphabetical order, because I'm obsessive like that.

+ Ray rubbing his hand across his beard in Fucking Rain.

+ Ray waking up to hear Fraser talking to Dief about him in Bugs and Thorns. "Yes, I did notice he smells like cucumbers. No, I don't think that's strange. You realize I wouldn't be having puppies anyway?" (This I did not look up, so it's not word accurate.)

+ Fraser and the ten minutes grace in Leaving Normal.

+ Ray fucking up his hands on the telephone pole in the hockey AU.

+ Ray driving into Canada with Michael at the end of Sunday's Child. (Hi, I'm a SAP.)

+ Ray coming in after cheating on Fraser in End of the Road, and Fraser smelling him, and that whole conversation they have, and then Fraser leaving for work.

+ Fraser crying in the bathtub and telling the wolf story in in your corner (ha, F/V alert!)

+ Pretty much the entirety of Homemaking, but especially this part: For a second Ray was tempted to whip off the towel and take him up on it, because Fraser had hands that could make a shelter out of two overcoats and a tree branch, and they were just as talented at other things. Which I cheated and looked up, but whatever.

+ Fraser getting the handjob from Charlie Anderson in Passion.

+ The scene with Dief and Bob Fraser in Mangy Dog, with Fraser calling Dief off, it doesn't matter, it's all right, stew is *fine*. (Actually, almost all of this story is completely there in my head; I'm trying to be good and just pick one. But, oh! Dief is deeply ensconced in my left armpit as well.)

+ Ray banging his hand against the steering wheel so he'll stop being a sicko thinking about beat-up!bloody!Fraser in The latest party.

Oh, God. There's a story like that out there? Note to self: avoid, avoid, avoid.

Just reading that one sentence there is nearly enough to make me cry. I think I have a super low angst tolerance with these boys.

End of the Road is the most incredibly written and perfectly, exquisitely painful F/K story I've ever read; Kat's an amazing writer. I do understood the scary angst reaction, though.

Oy. I'm so not into pain, exquisite or otherwise. I'm a pretty big angst wimp all around, but I do love me some hurt/comfort an awful lot. It's my purest, truest kink. Happy ending though, otherwise I'll wallow for days.

End of the Road is one of the most beautiful things I've read and I will never, ever read it again. I am one of those people who need a happy ending.

I desperately need a happy ending, and yet for some reason, I read EotR an average of once a week or so. Actually, it's probably more like two or three times a month. Still.

(Did you read Exposures? It's just as beautiful as EotR, and just as traumatizing.)

Hee. I remember talking to Dira about deathfic once and her assuring me it was kind of a happy ending, because they both died, so they were still, you know, together. "I could never write just one of them dying! It'd be too depressing, with the one having to go on without them."

*loves Dira*

HAHAH! I think, actually, that SK and I had a similar conversation about that fic! And I have to agree, frankly. :)

OMG, that was so uncalled for!

Now I shall write more deathfic and dedicate it ALL TO YOU.

Heeeeeeeeeeeee.

Let's not forget that I was totally going to end Surviving with Ray getting shot and killed.

Let's also not forget about the three pages of Ray/Fraser/Victoria/Chicago/handgun tragique fic sitting on my hard drive, waiting for me to have the nerve to finish it.

*g*

Are you serious? I could totally go for some gutwrenching deathfic.

Hee, no, I totally wasn't. Sorry. But if I do come up with some, I really will dedicate to you! *loves*

Ray/Fraser/Victoria/Chicago/handgun

Heeeeee. Reading the slashes automatically as sexual/romantic pairings makes that really, really funny.

I just got the worst image ever of a dS AU in which Fraser does go off with Victoria and leaves Vecchio hanging and leaves Dief (sob!) and Victoria abuses him terribly and, at one point, fucks him up the ass with a handgun that's loaded and tells him that if he comes, she'll shoot him -- and if his erection flags, she'll shoot him.

Oh, I hate you.

Wow, I honestly don't think there's anyway you can blame me for that. That's, like, all your own freakiness there.

You lose at life!

Actually, sadly, from that thing above I am mostly trying to wrap my head around any conceivable way a Ray/Fraser/Victoria threesome would work. I got zip.

It would work. It would work if Victoria was posing as someone else, and Ray and Fraser had decided to have a threesome because that would be a good way to ease themselves into the weird gay sex thing that they seem to be kind of wanting to do, and Victoria was following them, and Ray picks her up and is like, "Hey, Fraser, I got us a girl. Bathroom or something, ok?" and then Ray goes and is fucking her, and Fraser comes in and is kissing Ray, and then kissing her, and then she opens her eyes and looks at him with real venom, and Fraser is like, "Ray! No! Stop!" and Ray doesn't realize what's going on and suddenly Ray is falling, falling, and there's blood everywhere, and Victoria spits at Fraser and says, "You took my life. Now I took yours."

Oh, I have no idea how that turned into deathfic.
Crap.

Heeeeeee. I would read it, but ... you know.

The ending is a little weak, though, I think. For some reason in my head Victoria suddenly had a Russian accent.

Yesyesyes, and the whole conversation that Ray has with Fraser's new partner. OMG. So good and so scary and so Ray. I just reread this, oh I don't know, today. This is an excellent meme.

Just adding my yes, yes, yes! to this because for me, this moment is when everything breaks, and not because of the cheating, really, but just because this is the moment when it's no longer possible for them to go back, and everything afterwards is the painful slow trudge to the end. God, that scene killed me--I was an absolute wreck.

There are just really few things more intensely satisfying to me to read than a really well-done argument scene. It's the flipside of porn, I suppose: that emotional connection, pressing each other's button, the knowledge of each other, the intensity. Mmmm.

Oh man, Ray and the telephone pole just rips me apart. That whole encounter from the fight to running to down the stairs to the telephone poll to coming back and being on the bathroom floor with Mort and Fraser watching. Oh the ache. My heart just bleeds for him.

Ray coming in after cheating on Fraser in End of the Road, and Fraser smelling him, and that whole conversation they have, and then Fraser leaving for work.
When I first read that I was just stunned. Absolutely stunned. Such a beautiful story. And I'm one of those people who definitely does NOT need a happy ending.

I know what you mean. I've actually got it printed out and I've been going through on hard copy and making notes in the margin because I wanted to give her some serious feedback on this story. I often have trouble with AUs, but this one just really worked for me because the writing is so great. Vivid is exactly right. I read it and really feel like I'm watching a movie.
