Dear [livejournal.com profile] serialkarma:

First this was going to be a Men With Brooms ficlet; but then I realized I've only seen the movie once, and don't own the DVD to refresh things with. And then I thought Twitch City, but this icon's mood is, like, the antithesis of Twitch City.

So, in the end, what you get is Molly Parker cast as an OFC in a strange little due South ficlet. Um. Sorry?

You climb out onto the fire escape to have a cigarette. Ben's wolf follows you out and sits down near your feet while you look out at the city and scramble for your lighter. The last time you saw Diefenbaker, he was a small, skinny little thing; you'd met Ben up for tea and scones while you were in Yellowknife, the first time you'd seen him in five years, and he'd dragged along this wolf and charmed the proprietor with a story about how the animal had saved him from a bear trap and he owed him a debt of gratitude. The pup's grown now; you'd hardly know it was the same animal, if Ben's interactions with it weren't just the same.

Your hearing is nowhere near as sharp as Ben's -- nobody in your class came even close to him -- but it's certainly better than Ben's boyfriend seems to think it is. They're cleaning up dinner from the table, and the length of the room between you and the kitchen isn't far enough that you can't understand perfectly clearly what he's saying.

"So. What's the story with you two, then?" Ben's boyfriend says, in an obviously faux-casual voice. You haven't decided what you think of the man yet -- you wouldn't have pegged him for Ben's type, at all. Too skinny, too loud, too tense, all ragged edges and brittle pieces.

"I don't know what you mean," Ben said -- he, at least, was talking a little more quietly, but you've know him long enough to fill in the blanks.

The boyfriend snorts and says, "Oh, don't give me that crap, Fraser -- you know exactly what I mean. You and her have a thing back when?"

You shake your head at that and take another drag from your smoke, but you're still listening to hear how Ben answers.

"Really, Ray, you know I'm not going to--"

"Yeah, chivalry, whatever, I'm just saying, she's a hot chick, you guys were tight--" His voice is getting louder as he talks; even if your hearing was average, you'd be able to hear the end of the sentence.

There's a sudden loud clatter. You hear Ben say, "Why, Ray. Are you jealous?" It's his amused tone -- you've been on the receiving end of that tone many a time, and it never gets less infuriating.

"Fuck you--" Ben's boyfriend starts, and then there's silence. When you chance a glance back into the apartment, you can see them locked in an embrace in the doorframe to the kitchen. You look immediately away again, feeling uncomfortable, and vaguely uneasy about your eavesdropping. You crouch down next to the wolf, reaching to pet him with your free hand, and listen to the sounds of the city, different and distinct from any of the others you've visited.

Really, though, you wonder a little at the boyfriend's question -- as though Benton Fraser would ever be able to be friends with one of his exes. That would require getting over people, or at the very least falling out of love. That's not something you've ever seen with Ben, and you've known him half your life.

You shake your head a little and stroke at Ben's wolf's belly till you reach the end of your cigarette, and then you climb back into the apartment.
