Okay, so thinking on a point [livejournal.com profile] dsudis made months and months ago about extrapolating from canon -- who is smarter than me and remembers the different instances where we see the characters drinking?

So far what I remember is:

a) Fraser canonically says he doesn't drink
b) Ray Kowalski mentions martinis in the come-ons in BDtH, but I'm almost sure we never actually see him drinking or having drank (see the Despondency in Ladies Man)
c) Ray Vecchio I'm pretty sure we see on more than one occasion, but the only one I remember now is the wine in Juliet is Bleeding.
d) Frannie I am drawing a total blank, other than her mentioning asking Fraser out for drinks in The Deal.
e) Thatcher is definitely visibly tipsy in Odds, and I think we may see her with wine on other occasions, but I wouldn't swear it.
f) Stella and Orsini's champagne explodes in Strange Bedfellows.

Otherwise the only thing else I remember is that Welsh's and Vecchio's fathers were both either explicitly stated or strongly implied to be alcoholics.

So who has a tighter grasp of canon than me, hmm?

I am sad that RayK doesn't canonically drink beer. He seems like a beer sort of guy. Whisky when he's upset. But no, I don't think we do see him drinking.

I can remember two times that we see RayK drinking. In Ladies Man, with the security guy that gets killed in the strip club. He and Ray drink from the flask Tracy Jenkin's security guy offers. I think in Odds (?) Ray and Welsh drink some amber liquid from glasses in Welsh's office. They're talking about whether they think Fraser can pull off being in the poker game, I do believe.

We know that RayK at least know how to pick out good whiskey (eclipse) and everytimes we see Fraser drink something it's usally water or milk.

They drink whiskey or something similar in Welsh's office in Call of the Wild. I say "they" because I can't remember offhand who gets a glass, but Frannie and Welsh and Vecchio and Stella are there.

I think I remember part of my point about RayK's general non-drinking being a capital Hm at the fact that he so pointedly doesn't drink in the bar, yet does accept a glass of whatever Franklin pours him. But, yeah, I think that may well be the only time we see him drink.

I think it totally makes sense for his character to be a beer-drinker. I mean, even if we don't actually see it, I think it's a characteristic that we can extrapolate from the canon and still have it work for him. (I think the context Dira was originally thinkign about drinking in regards to had to do with whether or not Ray was an ex- or current smoker, which had a lot to do with the claim that since we never specifically see him smoke, it was bad characterization. So the issue of what *is* reasonable extrapolation is kind of important.)

Doesn't Ray have a beer in the episode where the guy he's meeting gets killed and that air hostess chick or whatever is in it? I don't think he actually drinks any of it, but that may be opportunity rather than inclination.

Yes, that's the one. Now I can stop thinking of it as "that episode I always skip over because it was crap"

Also, RayK and Sam Franklin have a drink together (some kind of hard liquor) in Ladies' Man, I'm pretty sure.
