So, okay, a full, like, ninety percent of the reviews on Meg Cabot's new novel over on Amazon.com follow the following format:

OMG TEENAGERS HAVE SEX THAT IS SO WRONG YOU ARE SICK MEG CABOT. DON'T YOU KNOW YOU HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO THE YOUTH OF AMERICA TO DISCOURAGE PREMARITAL SEX? SHAME ON YOU, MEG CABOT. SHAAAAAAAAAAAAME.

*cackles* This is awesome.

::looks over my librarian glasses::

Very, VERY popular writer of what's essentially early-teen-marketed 'relationship' stories.

Can you imagine how many kids will want to read them after *seeing* those comments?? Even if they didn't already.

Sweet Valley is awesome! But it is also mass-produced and focused much more on shocking people and much less on being a geek (although Francine Pascal, for the record, is AWESOME- did you read the article in Bust?). Like, Mia (of Princess Diaries) is a princess, who is also a vegetarian who watches Farscape and collects Buffy action figures and is in love with the president of the computer club.

Both deal with sex, abstractly, but no one dies (yet) in the Princess Diaries, and also they are much more queer-friendly.

*flails. uncontrollably*

Meg Cabot is the COOLEST WOMAN ALIVE.

No, seriously, she is. She wrote the Princess Diaries series, which is far, far better than the movies, and even make fun of the movies, and frequently reference geek television and, IIRC, once mentioned fanfiction! And 1-800-WHERE-R-U, on which 1-800-MISSING is based, but which is actually really cool even though you would not expect it! And Mediator, which okay, I haven't read, but supposedly good! And the book about the girl who saves the president's son! And some excellent chicklit, which somehow slips in pro-gay messages into her grown-up straight love stories! And the COOLEST BLOG EVER, OMG (http://megcabot.com/blog/blogger.html).

...Um. Not to be crazy or anything.

But seriously? The Cabot, she is awesome. Everyone should read her. And then write fic based on her works.

Well, FWIW, I now seem inclined to check out her non-Princess Diaries books.

The Princess Diaries are approximately eight gazillion times more interesting and cool than the movie, too, by the way.

I didn't see the movies. It's just not the type of story that appeals to me (long-lost American royalty having an Amusing Adjustment Period).
