First thing: the thing about cowboy clothes, like I was telling Livia last night, is that those jeans make every guy's legs look skinny and ten feet long. This is a VERY GOOD thing. Seriously, it adds like ten hotness points, right there.

Second thing: I really, really don't understand why the scene where Alma sees Ennis and Jack kissing outside the apartment gets laughter from the audience. I personally was closer to gasping. WTF, yo?

We commented on this very same thing when we left the theater. I mean, I was gasping, and I felt so awful for Alma. I mean, that was just the destruction of her whole world there.

There was other stuff I didn't find funny, but I could at least kind of understand why the audience was laughing -- the shot of the motel sign, for instance -- but that just really made me go, what the hell.

I think the thing about that is that it's just such an awkward moment that the laughter is a release of tension. That's the only way I can think of that making sense, because everyone in the entire theater goes "oh shit" at the same time, and some of us cover our faces with our hands and peek out through our fingers at her horrified face and gasp, and other people do that and laugh. You're just so uncomfortable watching it that you have to do something, and default for a lot of people seems to be 'laugh'.

Okay, I think that actually makes sense; I can see that. You are very smart, darling.

yeah, that got a laugh in my theatre last night - the motel sign, as well as the Alma scene and also the "two high-altitude fucks a year" line (which is more understandable, as it is kind of a funny line, but in a fraught situation, so it didn't make me laugh). I wonder if it's not just the novelty of the couple being m/m that makes people anxious and ready to find everything funny so they don't have to take it seriously.

The seen where Alma sees Ennis and Jack kissing *almost* seems like it *should* be funny until you realize what this is going to do for them all, and you see Alma's face, and... yeah. It's *not* funny, it's not *supposed* to be funny, but I guess some people sort of see physical gag humor there? I don't know.

Also, there is *nothing* hotter than a man riding a horse, and the jeans just add to that, imo. Mmmm.

See, the horse thing doesn't do so much for me, but the jeans. Mmmmmmmm. Dude, their legs went on FOREVER and a HALF. Man.

Yup, the kissing scene where Alma sees them got a laugh in San Francisco, too, as did the scene where Randy Quaid's character sees them kissing through the binoculars. Which is more understandable to laugh at that second scene, because it's not like Randy's feelings are going to be hurt. But it's still dangerous and my audience did NOT get that. ::pets Alma::

I don't remember if our audience laughed at that, but I do remember that we all laughed when Alma asks 'Aren't you forgetting something?' and Ennis comes back and grabs his tackle box, and doesn't say a word to her. I started laughing, then went -- oh, fuck. There were several moments like that where it was set up so it could be a laugh, but then you realize it's serious, and you feel like a dick for laughing.
Though I was surprised that Alma didn't throw out the postcard...

there's actually a thing in this week's EW about cowboy clothes and how the shirts are sewn to be snug and teh hotness.

I am maybe paraphrasing.
