10 due south recs
25/12/05 13:45I think I've finished my first run-through of the
ds_seekritsanta stories this year, yay! I'll go back later and see if there was anything good I managed to overlook, but for now, here are a couple of stories that I enjoyed.
ds_seekritsanta recs:
Swing Low, Sweet Chariot -- awwwww. Fraser, F/RK-ish.
Loss, like snow, fades with the season.
The Sound of Silence -- They are CAPTURED by MIMES. No, SERIOUSLY. F/K.
Ray frowned. “Look, buddy. I’m not the one that’s gonna have to be washing off mime paint in a prison shower, you got me?”
Gift Exchange -- I may have a kink for Fraser's mommy stories, and this was lovely. F/K.
“I don’t have regrets,” Ben heard himself lie, and why did this one come so easily? “I’m exactly where I belong, exactly where I’m needed most.”
Il n'y a pas de pommes de terre -- Yay for F/K porn! GOOD porn! F/K.
There was a long pause, and then Fraser said carefully, "Your hospitality is always quite warm, Ray."
Taken for Granted -- I love this for the scene in the hospital room. Very nice Dief interaction, too. F/K.
Come to that, Fraser doubts that Ray will ever be able to sedate his natural suspicion of everyone and everything. "So, just curious. Where'd you think I was? You know, all day?"
1997 -- Oh, some very nice lines here. F/K.
"Hey," he says, and Fraser isn't soggy from the Chicago sleet, or shivering from the cold, like everybody else. Of course he isn't, no, Fraser's cheeks are red and his hat has a lovely little layer of white snow along the brim, and his peacoat doesn't show signs of a single splashdown by a passing truck. He doesn't have his uniform on, but rather jeans, a blue flannel shirt that looks shamefully good on him, and a white turtleneck that sticks up by the collar. He looks like the poster boy for Healthy Woodsmen Anonymous.
Waiting for the Weird -- Fraser adds, "Go and dance. I like to see you dance." Meeep. Yeah, that one sentence got me RIGHT WHERE I LIVE. F/K.
Banging -- Okay, it took me a really long time to realize how the structure of this worked; it makes much more sense when I'm not trying to make it into one continuous story. There's some very nice writing here. F/K, mostly.
Fraser’s raised eyebrow disappears under the hard hat sitting low on his forehead. “Surely not a polar bear, Ray. They are, after all, in imminent danger of extinction.”
The Best Parts of Lonely -- Aww, schmoopy goodness is always fun. F/K.
"I have nothing but the highest regard for the people of Denmark, Ray," Fraser said. "And those employed in the field of animal husbandry, in fact. Regardless of their area of specialization."
Dinner Date -- I'm not 100 percent on the F/V slash train, but I loved both the Fraser and Vecchio characterizations here and their conversation a lot. F/V.
"I may have somewhat exaggerated that statement for the sake of sparing Francesca's feelings," Benny finally said, splaying out his fingers in a motion that indicated smoothing something over. Ray had no idea what that was supposed to mean.
Things to Do at Juniper at One O'Clock in the Morning -- Mmmmm, yes. Just lovely. F/K.
All this was his big declaration: that when he was standing there playing nice to a bunch of other Mounties, when he was driving around in Fraser's rented four-wheel saying yeah, it'd be nice to have land on a river, or maybe Fraser should look at some of the property a little closer to town, what he was really saying was that he could maybe see himself living in a place with only dirt roads, that he could maybe imagine them putting a little cabin right here where the trees came down to the water.
I know some people don't like to comment on stories because of the anonymity thing, but, uh. You should comment anyway! I say this as a person who wrote a story and is checking back every hour. Hee.

I've started commenting anonymously. I figure that's the best of both worlds. :)
