So in my intermittant Six Feet Under watching, I have just finished off the third season.

Thoughts:

1) The thing that always impresses me about this show, I think, is how the characters are so severely flawed and even assholish that they should be unlikable, it feels like, but you like them and you care about them anyway.

2) That said, wow, is Nate an asshole.

3) Repeated exposure to Lili Taylor has now cured me of the urge to hum the Joe song from Say Anything... every time I see her.

4) I think the relationship between Claire and Ruth is possibly my very favorite one of the entire show. <3<3.

5) Dude, SERIOUSLY. Nate's kid = cutest baby ever. Awwwwww.

6) I always think I am never going to be shocked by anything on a HBO show ever, but that is a dirty dirty lie, because I always am. It possibly says sad things that Claire getting an abortion on the show surprised me more here than anything else. I wasn't that surprised by the incest on Rome, yo.

7) I am surprised by how unspoiled I am for this show, just by vaguely flitting along and not paying attention to what other people said about it. Uh, good for me!

8) My season 4 download is going way too slowly. *waits impatiently*

Out of curiosity, why do you think Nate is an asshole? Towards the end of S3, he definitely headed into asshole territory, but prior to that I saw him as one of the more considerate and less-fucked-up characters. A lot of people seem to think he's an asshole, and that Brenda and Lisa are just wonderful (whereas I thought Brenda was psychotic until S3 and Lisa is annoyingly passive-aggressive). I'm just curious here.

Claire's abortion definitely surprised me, too. I was even more surprised at how there wasn't any aftermath (perhaps her family finds out in S4?).

Well, you know, for the first two seasons, I would consider Nate more a charismatic jackass, if that makes sense -- kind of self-involved and a guy who had never grown up or had to actually get OVER himself. I mean, I think Brenda was also one, which is one of the reasons they kind of deserved each other. But also, I think Brenda was fucking nuts in the first two seasons, as was Lisa in the third, although in completely different ways.

But the end of season 3? Made me just, gah, hate him. Becoming selfish and fucked-up and manipulative and irresponsible and deliberately cruel to everybody who loves you or cares about you = low standing in my eyes, no matter how traumatized you are by your missing wife.
