A short list of characters I love beyond all reason and who tend to reduce me to crazy flailing:

+ Benton Fraser (due South)
+ Sam Vimes (Discworld)
+ Aeryn Sun (Farscape)
+ George O'Malley (Grey's Anatomy)
+ Hope (Twitch City)
+ Duck MacDonald (Wilby Wonderful)

(Other characters who live just on the other side of the borderline include Lindsay Weir, Titus Pollo, Ray Kowalski, Izzie Stevens, River Tam, etc.)

In theory, I think there was must be some kind of organizing principle that I could point to for what these guys all have in common, but I can't really identify what it is. Except for the obvious bit about how complex good people are much more interesting than villains, of course.

Tonight I am staying up very late to finish a paper; I apologize in advance for the spammage that may ensue.

The only person in Discworld I love nearly as much as Sam Vimes is Lady Sybil. They are ridiculously OTP for me, so that I cannot ever ever ever read Vimes paired with anybody else.

Yep yep, Sam&Sybil 4eva. I only include Vetinari in the header because he is the other person on the Disc who makes me flail almost as much as Vimes, especially when I read things like Jingo. All right, him and DEATH. And maybe the Death of Rats. And Sybil, when she went all cutthroat economist in the one about Uberwald with all the Chekhov jokes, and oh I'll just shut it now.

Oh wow. I have just started reading these books - Guards! Guards! and, on the flight back yesterday, Men at Arms - and I swear that while I find the books wonderfully funny and I love Vetinari, Lady Sybil is the reason I kept reading Guards! Guards! OMG!

Uh, sorry. I just had to share.
