schmericaBenny thinks it was the wife, but he's wrong. She's just covering up for the kid: it was the stepson for sure, Ray knows it. Benny might have grown up all alone among the caribou, but Ray can remember what it's like being that age, hormones flying, everything important. There's nothing in this world stupider than a teenager in love.
It's not the same thing -- Ray never stabbed his old man, no matter what a jerk he was -- but Ray used to climb up the vine into the second floor of the Zuko house, wrap himself around Irene in her tent of a bed. Just the two of them, holding and loving each other, in that warm dark little space, like it was all their own, absolutely silent, because no one could hear, not her father, not her brothers, nobody. Ray's not dead and he never went to jail, but it's not because he was smarter than the kid in this case, or because he wouldn't have done even stupider stuff for Irene; it's just because he was luckier. Maybe his ma's prayers for him every night paid off, Ray doesn't know.
He would've done anything for her. It's definitely the kid.
Fraser just sighs. He thinks he's right, just because he's always right. But there's some stuff Ray knows that Frase just doesn't and never will.
