Girl best friend pining over oblivious long-loved guy best friend = MY BULLETPROOF SQUICK.

The best possible ending for that scenario, in my opinion, is always going to be "Girl gets the fuck over it, moves on, and hopefully finds person who adores her already." The alternative of "Guy best friend opens his eyes and gets a clue" gives me the creepy crawlies.

SQUICK SQUICK SQUICK.

I agree with you that plotlines in which "Guy finally opens his eyes" counts as some kind of resolution are the suck, but what do you think about how they resolved W/X? I admit to being squeeful that they got together, because I am OMG BEEN THERE DONE THAT in regards to Willow's sad longing crush, but I like the fact that it all backfired and nothing ever happened again.

I am not ... overly fond of the W/X in s3, but I'm not actually how much of that is just how very very much I like Willow/Oz and Xander/Cordelia as couples. I mean, I think how they did it on the show works, and it makes good tv, but that's because it's stupid and wrong and kind of icky.

I like the other two couples, but I secretly love W/X. But how much of that is the hidden!sex/cheating kink, how much of it is overidentifying with Willow and her desperate crush, and how much of it is actually liking the pairing? *g*

Oh, see, I think the overidentifying is one of the reasons I hate it so much, if that makes sense. I cringe.

I am so there with you, and the Willow/Xander stuff was just...painful and yucky!

However, oddly enough, the scenario you describe is just *exactly* what I'm looking for in my slash fanfiction half the time. Give me two guy best friends, and one pining from afar, and the other one finally getting a clue, and the happily ever after--oh *yeah*! *g*

Heee. Yeah, actually, I'm not a huge fan of that, either, a lot of the time -- it's a really hard balance to strike, I think, to do it well and not fall into weird power balances or fall into another episode of the Asshole and the Doormat.

I am right there with you on that being the bulletproof squick (I think I finally understand why Clark/Chloe always made me feel sort of ill).

The s1 Willow/Xander makes me grouchy.

Clark/Chloe was the definitive version of this, for me. When I was still reading in SV fandom, that was my one and only real squick, like, ever -- that pairing.

I just watched "The Pack" the other day and I was so pissed off for Willow with the way Xander treated her when he was possessed. I wish she could have just told him off at some point.

I have mixed feelings about how things ended in S3. I loved Xander/Cordelia, but I have to admit that I liked the sneaking around, kissing in the library stuff.

See, the problem with this sort of storyline is not only do I get annoyed at Oblivious Boy, but eventually I get just as pissed at Pining Girl and want to go "What the fuck is your problem? Get over it.""
