I think in a lot of ways it's just easy to write in fandoms that already have at least the beginnings of being established, you know? Wilby has dozens of stories at this point, as does Hugh/Callum. Men With Brooms doesn't, but it still has significantly more than Twitch City and S&A, both of which I could probably count on my fingers. Plus, of course, they're just hard. I know with my story I looked at the request list and got all excited about the cool stuff my recipient was asking for, and then ended up writing another HCL story anyway. Heh.

ONTO THE RECS. There were lots and lots of good stories this year -- these are just the six that struck me closest, with all my own prejudices and tastes under consideration.

Sageness, Vinculum

This is the story written for me (it's mine! all mine! mwahahaha!) for the challenge; I requested Wilby Wonderful, Dan-centric backstory. And the thing about Dan backstory is that the movie really shows him at his lowest point ever, so the story almost by definition has to show him descending there. This is quiet and gentle and painful; luckily you get to keep in your mind how canon allows him to begin to ascend again.

Isis, Call This World Home

This is a fusion with Last Night, showing ordinary people reacting and dealing with the world coming to an end. Only in this case, Isis focuses on the people of Wilby. The best Wilby fic manages the same feeling of tenderness and caring for the characters that the movie does; this story definitely does that.

Brooklinegirl, 43 Degrees Celsius

Dude. Okay, so, BLG writes good porn in general. And I like reading guy/guy/girl threesomes. And I like CKR. And I freaking adore Molly Parker. And this has all of this, but it's also incredibly snarky and fun and doesn't take itself too seriously and just -- heart.

MrsRonWeasley, Mint, Part Deux: Beer

Men With Brooms, Cutter/Lennox. Where they are teenagers and there is pot and beer and a pool table, and Cutter discovers unexpected side effects. To wit: He heard a record feedback in his head and glanced over at the joint still held between Lennox’s fingers. What had that shit been laced with, homo-drugs? There is no bad there.

Rhythmsexion, Dearly Beloved

More Men With Brooms fic, this time the aftermath of a pre-movie drinking night among Amy and the four boys. I am a sucker for that sort of scenario in general, and the Amy POV here is just kickass. God, if this movie is good at anything, it's at creating really fucked up characters, often assholes, who are still really likable.

Leah, Dog-eared

Another Wilby fic, this one post-movie Dan/Duck. Again, the degree of tenderness and quiet moments here is what makes this special. I like the Duck here, especially.

For those of you who were gone this weekend, I posted a HCL story for the challenge, which you can find here.

In other news, [livejournal.com profile] sloganeer scanned in an interview with Paul Gross, talking about Wilby Wonderful, Daniel MacIvor and Callum Keith Rennie in her journal here. It is pretty awesome, frankly.

Plans for the rest of the day: rewatching more of Farscape s3, and ice cream.
