Last night I woke up to go to the bathroom, and when I came back to bed, waiting to fall asleep again, I was struck with a sudden random thought, which was this:

The Frasers ARE complete romantics. It's just that they're really, really bad at it.

I mean, seriously! You look at Bob and Benton, and there's totally this interesting tug-of-war going through them. There's the part of Bob that wrote to his wife "every damned day of his life" and went totally off his rocker when she died. There's the part of Benton we see in Victoria's Secret (and to a lesser extent in Bounty Hunter), the loneliness and longing and yearning. Both of them do seem to be complete, head-over-heels romantics, is the thing -- it's just that that aspect of their personalities is in constant conflict with the rest of them, the parts that are fair and logical and hearty and dutiful and "buck up, little camper!"

So there's that.

Other thought I had last night: I suddenly want fanon that Fraser's mom was Francophone. CANON BASIS FOR THIS: ZERO. And it's not like Pinsent is a particularly French name. I don't care, I find it bizarrely charming anyway. Who is to say it is NOT SO, is what I say! (Plus I did not just randomly come across this article on Franco-Tenois in wikipedia. Because that would be weird.)

Yeah, I know, I'm crazy. No one else wants wee Fraser to be sung to sleep with French lullabies.

THIRD THING OF DISCUSSION. [livejournal.com profile] shoemaster wrote me commentfic on my last entry! See? See? See? This means that she has officially become my favorite for the day. The rest of you will just have to try harder, I guess! I need to figure out how I am going to take care of the pony I promised her.

Wow, that's an excellent sudden thought *is impressed* Hehe, they do kindasorta suck at that. And ohhhh! The corsages with the reporter lady! He had them *in his fridge!* And he couldn't decide between them! Even if he did know she was playing him, he was still worried about flowers and his hair and his suit, even if he took his pliers to the lobster *g*

Awww, yes, he is so adorably awkward sometimes, isn't he? Not to mention whatever the hell his chivalry thing is all about in Heaven and Earth.

Pony can also be interpreted as kidfic. Or just boyfriends in general. If you can actually work in the pony, I'd be way impressed.

Google tells me that Pinsent is actually a Norman name, and that the family came over to England after the conquest in 1066. So, you know, maybe some of them stayed in France, and Fraser's mom came from that line? Or it could be that she just has an English last name but is from Quebec anyway, which is not totally unheard of. So it could happen! Who cares that there's no canon support! ahem.

Canon support is FOR THE WEAK. There's nothing that says it CAN'T BE TRUE, therefore LET'S ROCK, is what I say. Yes.

Oh, I totally agree (well, I'd never thought about Bob that way before, but it makes sense) -- I have a whole collection of Fraser-is-a-romantic quotes I was going to post some time. And there are all these little things, like when he's holding the widow in Eclipse and she's talking about how much she loved her husband, he gets this happy, approving smile, and so on.

Yes! He has lots of these little moments -- like in Say Amen! He wants to believe in love! -- and it's just that they mix weirdly with his underlying personality. Which is why we get weird things like his inner ear infection.

Fraser is a total romantic! I think subconsciously I've always thought of him that way; it's just a facet of his personality I've always seen on some level, even if I took it for granted. Victoria's Secret is total tragic romance. Fraser chasing after Victoria before he finally met her again, the confessional, the fingers-in-mouth, the poetry, the near-getaway . . . yes. I kind of want to include the Fraser/Thatcher kiss from ATQH in that, too. I mean, it was on top of a train! That's slightly iconic in a grand sweeping romance (with absurdity, naturally) way. Maybe that is more Paul Gross than Fraser, but hey. I think for all he's jaded and dark Fraser can be a complete idealist, and definitely when it comes to romance.

I kind of adore the idea of Caroline being Francophone. It is sweet.

Also, I have friended you because I enjoy your fic and fandom-y thoughts, and hope that you don't mind if I comment from time to time. Hi!

See, I definitely see the romance in his soul, but I still think it is at war with his natural sensible nature half the time. Hee.

Fraser is totally a romantic, and not just in sense of the word that applies to romances; his idealism is also very romantic. It's one of the most interesting things about Fraser--he's so romantic, but he has that fundamental practicality that allows him to do the fussy, messy little things you need to build an ideal. Contradictory though it may be, he makes it work and is pretty successful (well, sometimes, and more so in the public service/social ideals arena than in his love life, poor man). Of course, it also plays into why the Victoria thing is so tragic, because the romantic-logical conflict created the situation in the first place and then led to his downfall in VS, as he picks the wrong aspect to follow each time. In fact, if you wanted to analyze that ep through the lens of classical tragedic structure, you could make a very strong argument for this dichotomy being the hero's tragic flaw. But I'm a giant classics nerd, so...yes, maybe it's just me. :)

Yeah, I know, I'm crazy. No one else wants wee Fraser to be sung to sleep with French lullabies.

NOT TRUE. I love this idea. You are not alone!

Also, hi. Have finally friended you back. *waves*

I do! I do! Caroline speaks French to Benton in all the fics I never get around to writing. So much so that Benton accidentally becomes more fluent in French than English and is rather a surprise to Bob when he stops by, who delivers a lecture to tiny!Benton on how it's more practical to speak English, complete with sidebar into a story about a beartrap, a sextant and Buck Frobisher in a dress, which mostly leaves Benton with the confused impression that he shouldn't talk to his own mother.

I have too much time on my hands, maybe.
