So, uh, I actually did enjoy the Who finale. There were pretty people! Witty banter! Things went boom! There was a mixture of awesomely cheesy and cheesily awesome! Those are basically the things I'm watching for in any given Doctor Who thing, anyway. And Martha Jones is pretty much the awesomest character ever, so there's that. (omigod MARTHA. HEART.)

What's really interesting is I don't think I've seen fannish majority opinion go from EEEEEEE AWESOME EXCITEMENT to OMG WTF BETRAYED!!! this fast since the season 1 Veronica Mars finale. What makes that really funny, of course, is that in that case I was one of the people on the other side: I saw "a Trip to the Dentist" and was so excited for the finale, the pinnacle of the awesome, that I could hardly STAND it -- and then "Leave it to Beaver" was on, and it was so just wrong and awful and like a big bag of crap, and ugh. So, uh, I totally understand how people are feeling about this episode from that side, but it's weird being the person who watched it and enjoyed it all "la-di-da!" and drifted onto the internet all unknowingly to find out.

I was telling [livejournal.com profile] cidercupcakes earlier that I cannot imagine even how year-of-Martha can, you know, ever meet up to the awesomeness we are all imagining right now.

I enjoyed it, because it was Doctor/Master-ness through the roof and Martha was hot and awesome and hot (and so damn hot in her world-saving boots and fatigues) and Jack spent a year chained up and probably being killed every day and twice on Sundays (and chained up is always a good look on Jack). I think the main problem is that it wasn't quite as awesome as The Sound of Drums. Although the slashiest death scene in the history of death scenes added a huge amount of awesome.

I am always amused that John Simm tends to end up playing slashy, charismatic characters when you consider that he's almost painfully straight and, well, dull.

There should be more chained-up Jack.

DIRTY chained-up Jack. I think the dirtiness added a certain je ne sais quoi.

Oh, yes.

Dear Torchwood writers,

Please to be remembering how much the audience enjoyed dirty, chained-up Jack. Also, please to be remembering why people watch your show.

You know what I'm saying, Torchwood writers.

Love,
Me.

*sighs* I haven't seen Torchwood yet, you know. I'm not sure how long that is going to last now that my Who supply is dried up all the way to *Christmas*, though.

Give in to the pretty. *nods*

(But bear in mind that these are Doctor Who writers who are suddenly allowed to include EXPLICIT SEX and they go a little bit crazy. Especially as the entire staff of Torchwood is sexually flexible.)

I have joined the Martha Love bandwagon. Yay!
I think there were some things that were silly, but I also feel like in Doctor Who the silly is part of the awesome. It was definitely a dip on the awesomeness bar chart after Sound of Drums, but I'd rather have the show take on huge messy themes and have to do a somewhat rushed job of resolving them than, you know, not be a big awesome space opera at all.

Also, the Doctor/Master is pretty much rocking my world.

Hi, I can apparently say the word awesome eight hundred times per sentance. Please read half of those awesomes as "enjoyable" , "gratifying", or the synonym of your choice.

Hee, don't worry, if there is anyone who would be sympathetic to the overuse of that word, it would be me!

Oh, I know. There were things that disappointed me in the finale-- some things that disappointed me a lot-- but there were also things that rocked, and on balance I enjoyed it, and it left me eager to see the next series. It's been hard going online wanting to talk about the exciting things-- and about the things that were seriously problematic-- and finding that most of my flist has catapulted through "the race and gender issues are getting seriously problematic" and all the way into "OMG BETRAYED!!!"

*nods* Yeah, it is totally hard when opinions are diverging that much! Like, I obviously think "OMG BETRAYED!!!" is a valid response, but when you have this seperation of bitterly disappointed people, people like you with issues but still okay and people like me who are shallow and go "Shiny!", it's hard to get good discussion.
