Here are some recs for you this fine July 4th! First, there is Price of Distance by nos4a2no9, which is a really lovely and evocative futurefic. It's loving and painful and honest, all at the same time, and it's poetic and descriptive in a way I would have thought would bore me (I have a short attention span) but which she makes work, absolutely beautifully.

Second rec is more general, because -- dude, you guys have all been reading arrow00, right? Her first dS story was posted in January, and the last six months have been totally productive. A new writer, writing in your favorite pairing, writing often, and writing really well? Seriously, is that not the most exciting thing in the world? I really admire how fresh the voice is in these stories; it feels like a new angle, a new version, and it adds an extra depth and characterization to the stories, even ones that are more or less PWPs.

I do not know who any of those people are (besides Superman), although I assume, because it's you, that they're TV mounties.

That said, Superman would be the worst hugger EVER. His superstrength would mean he was either awkwardly tentative or crushingly affectionate, and ALSO his GIANT SPACE PECS would probably not be very pillowy.

Fraser is a TV mountie, but Duck MacDonald is the character CKR plays in Wilby Wonderful. He is a gay handyman dude and is wonderful. *nods*

Also AWWWW your Superman theory makes me SAD. You don't think Superman must have a really firm grip of exactly how much strength he needs to exert for various things? I mean, it's not like he crushes mugs when he's drinking coffee. *ponders*

See, I think comparing George and Izzie probably isn't fair. It's like comparing buddy on the middle school hockey team to, say, Gretsky. George is probably top amateur, but Izzie hugs in the pro-leagues. It's because of her awesome rack.

I think some scientific studies should be performed re: Benton Fraser's ability to give good HUMAN hugs. Like, we need to test his faculty. Would you like to volunteer? I certainly would!

And even before I discovered Canada fandom I wouldn't have voted Superman for #1. He had a mullet once upon a time. And I do not think anyone with a mullet would ever be able to convince me that all would be right with the world. This is my moral system.

This whole discussion puts me to mind of Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex (http://www.rawbw.com/~svw/superman.html), Larry Niven's essay on why sex with Superman would be very very dangerous.

Which is why I would want Benton Fraser to hug me with his Mountie goodness, so I volunteer for the painful scientific study. ::peers around for sign-up sheet::

When Duck hugs, it smells like paint and sawdust and sweat, and if he's going to hug it's because he wants to give the hug, and he knows why he's doing it. Fraser physically is built for good hugs, but he sometimes feels he's giving them for the comfort of others without being entirely comfortable giving the hug, and that can sometimes bleed through.

Superman's hugs are too quick, and without the emotional connection behind them, and he has to go off and save the world again, and he's not going to hug you over the little stuff that really makes you feel like shit, just the big obvious things like space aliens with lasers.
