So, uh, you guys all know that when a pair of siblings is

a) the same sex
b) pretty close in age
c) really close friends

...it's not actually that unusual for them to talk about their sex lives with each other, right? The same way they would with any of their other friends?

I mean, "LALALALA I AM PUTTING MY HANDS OVER MY EARS BECAUSE I REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE MY BROTHER HAS A DICK AND/OR SEXUAL URGES" is a totally valid characterization, it really is. I just find it kind of weird that it seems so incredibly dominant in most MCR stories.

(Well, except for the incest stories. BUT THAT OBVIOUSLY DOESN'T COUNT. I'm talking about just normal non-incestuous Gerard+Mikey interaction!)

Speaking for myself, my own relationship with my brother colors pretty much all my writing/discussing of sibling relations, and we sort of...acknowledge that each other's sex lives exist in a general sense, and leave it at that. Though maybe I should take into better account that it might be different with same-sex siblings.

Also, at least among the bandom people I've talked to most, there's a trend to make the boys dorks and/or silly in a boyish way, and maybe "LA LA LA IGNORING ANY TALK OF BROTHER!SEX" fits better with that than calmly and maturely acknowledging your brother's sex life.

See, I know it's common for sibs to share sex stories and stuff- I have friends who have that kind of relationship- but with my own darling baby sister?

Well, she makes the rules, and apparently the rules are that she can tell me all about her sexcapades in as much detail as possible, but if I so much as mention that I may, at some distant point in the past, have possibly engaged in what could be considered a sexual activity, she literally does the whole LALALALA I AM PUTTING MY HANDS OVER MY EARS routine. So maybe this is why I'm not bothered by it in fic? But then again, there are other Issues I have with fic occasionally, so.

Me and my brother have pretty much the same age difference of the ways.

I think it's different when it's brother and sister. Cause I'll be like "HEY FRANKIE, DID YOU DO IT?"

I think they're both valid characterizations. On the one hand, I know a lot of siblings who talk about sex all the time, on the other, there are people who write infamous sexually explicit advice columns and still get squicked by the idea that their brother may have possibly ever had sex. So I'm usually confused that bandom almost always goes with the squicked option, too. (Although I guess the comedy value is far higher for that one.)

I think it has more to do with my personality than hers, quite frankly — she's seventeen, which is well after I started gettin sexy [although before I started drinking, which it also freaks me out that she does] — but I'm just like OH GOD, NO, YOU ARE MY BABY SISTER, STOP THIS. I enjoy that characterization, because it's funny, but after the interview where Gerard makes fun of Mikey's first time...Mikey must have told him about it, and it must not squick Gerard that much if he thinks it's funny to bring it up. But perhaps we need more interviews like that one before we can reach a canon consensus!

There also is the possibility, and this is totally guesswork here, that because there is such a strong incest contingent to this community, the non-incest people feel the need to ward it off as much possible. "See? They can't possibly be doing it; Mikey doesn't even like to acknowledge that Gerard has a penis!" &c.

I don't think the prevalence of this characterization bothers me as much as it bothers some other people, because I do put my hands over my ears when my brother starts in on this stuff. That said, I don't think I have ever read a non-Waycest story that had any other characterization, and I do so love variety in my fic.

That's a good point! I'd never really thought about it that way, because my brother and I have the EW COOTIES reaction, or would if it ever came up, and my sister's 13, so, yaknow. So it just never occurred to me.

Now I want stories where Gee and Mikey freely swap tales of their sexual adventures! Gee giving Mikey tips and perhaps a hand!

My sister sometimes talks to me about her personal life, I respond with very vague answers about my own or just give her advice that I have no real business giving. She's more comfortable about it than I am, though. So it may be a Big Sis/Little Sis divide

I've seen in a few fics the characterization where Gerard's cool with Mikey's sex life and Mikey's like "Omigod, Gee! You're my brother, get OUT!" and Gerard's all "I was just trying to help!" and that also is HILARIOUS.

(I'm thinking specifically of that one commentfic story where Frank is trying to give Mikey a blowjob and it's not going very well and eventually Gerard shouts from beyond the curtain "God, just DO it already!" and Mikey's like "Yeah, there's no way this is happening now")

My brothers (2 years younger than I) and I don't really discuss sex with each other. In our younger years we would do things like say "look, if you need condoms, go in my nightstand" and so on, but that was the extent of it. I know for sure an certain that my brothers have had intense, close, personal discussions of their sex lives with each other.

(My sisters and I are pretty far apart in age, but the closer they are to my stage in life the more personal our discussions about sex have been. If more of them were closer in age/stage of life, I am certain we'd have more & more personal discussions, just from the way our talks have altered in the past few years as more of them have graduated from college, etc. (I am 30 and have been married almost 7 years.))

I was having some thoughts about this kind of dynamic just last night, actually. Because I was wondering where all the stories about them talking shit and comparing and it just being a guys who happen to be brothers talking about sex kind of way.

I think I kind of just want a story where they're being guys. The whole band. Just sitting around talking about mishaps and ridiculous things that have happened in sexual encounters... and there's no cringing... except in sympathy because yes, shampoo is drying and not the best wank aid. And when Gerard starts in on a story about the time Elena walked in on him jerking off when he was fifteen (he forgot to lock the bathroom door), Mikey's already rolling on the floor laughing because he was *there* when it happened. He remembers how mortified everyone in the family was, except him. He thought it was hilarious when it happened and still thinks it's the funniest thing in the world. Because Gerard spent like two days swearing he was just going to chop his dick off. "Might as well. It's never going to work again. I'm never going to have sex. I can't. I mean..." all because his *grandmother* saw him jerking off...

Gerard finishes his story and Mikey's still laughing so hard he can barely breathe, and so are the rest of the guys. And Gerard's just all "Fuck you, Mikey! It's not like you LEARNED from my mistakes, you moron!" and then gets to tell them all about the time their MOM walked in on Mikey and his first girlfriend (She was sitting in his lap with his hand up her skirt and her shirt was unbuttoned and his pants were half way down his thighs... and he got grounded pretty much indefinitely and had to sit down and have a *conversation* about the dangers of unprotected sex with his father).

Mikey refuses to be embarrased! At least his getting caught involved something other than his own hand...

The rest of the band is just shaking their heads, because only the Way Brothers could tell these stories and yet STILL not have figured out how to lock doors when they are doing things they don't want to be interrupted in. And it moves on to Frank's turn...
