1) Ray got to the rehearsal space early, and Gerard was already there. It took Ray off guard, a little. He usually got there before Mikey, because Mikey was always late, and Gerard always seemed to come with Mikey. Ray wasn't used to seeing Mikey's weird brother without Mikey. It felt weird.
Gerard was sitting in the corner, staring into space, but he looked up and waved a little at Ray when he came in. Ray mumbled a hi back to him and sat down and starting taking his guitar out of his case. It was a little awkward, both of them sitting there in silence, and Ray tried to think of some sort of conversation they could make, but nothing was coming to him. The room smelled stale like old BO, and whenever he looked over at Gerard Gerard's eyes were closed and he was moving his lips silently. It was pretty creepy.
Ray was pretty relieved when the other guys showed up.
2) There was this one time, sleeping in the back of the van, when Ray woke up really suddenly, jerking out of this really deep sleep with no warning. He couldn't remember where he was at first, and while he was still getting his bearings, he blinked up towards the window and saw this face, calm and peaceful with the sunshine pouring over it at a weird angle, and Ray thought it might be the most beautiful person he'd ever seen -- and then his mind sorted back into place, and he remembered where he was, cramped and uncomfortable and stinky in the back of their tour van, and it was just Gerard, after all, turning to him and smiling and saying "Hey, dude!"
3) Gerard's voice cracked a little and he didn't look at them, just stared down at the pattern on his armchair as he announced it. Nobody moved for a second, and then Mikey was on his feet, crossing the couple of feet over to Gerard and pulling him up into a long hug. "I'm really proud of you," Mikey said. "I know you can do this." When Mikey let go, Frank was already there to take over the bear hug, clinging to Gerard tight.
Ray stood up, too, and he patted Gerard on the back a little awkwardly and didn't say anything. The other guys seemed to be getting their hopes up way too easily that this sobriety attempt would stick. Ray would wait and see.
4) After Mikey left the house, Gerard spent a lot of time sitting outside, right at the edge of pool. Everytime Ray passed by and saw him he wondered what Gerard was waiting for. If he was a better friend, he thought, he would have gone out and talked to him one of those times. But he was busy dealing with his own head; there wasn't any room for Gerard's.
5) He was on the bus, reading a magazine, when Gerard showed up out of nowhere.
"Ray!" Gerard said. He was practically quivering with excitement. It was kind of funny.
"Yeah, dude, what is it?" Ray said, setting the magazine down.
Gerard beamed at him, fucking beamed. "I'm getting married! Right now! You gotta come."
"Wait, you're doing what?" Ray said, but he was already standing up, and Gerard had grabbed his hand, and was pulling eagerly.
"Me and Lyn, we're getting married, right now. You'll -- you'll be my best man, right? Hold the ring?" Gerard glanced at him. "I want it to be you, Toro. You'll do it, right?"
"I -- yeah, man, fuck, of course!" Ray said. He could feel his own face breaking into a confused grin. "Of course."
Gerard stopped long enough to wrap his arms around Ray, rest his nose in his neck and squeeze him tight for almost a full minute, and then they were moving again, on the way to the wedding.
