truefuckinfax: because my school's linguistics department was for the longest time a stream in the English department, the profs had to teach some lit courses. The prof I'm thinking of was discussing the symbolism in some poem or another, and asked the students about what the rose in the poem symbolised.

After a couple of minutes of "wrong" answers he got frustrated and started shouting "It's a vagina!"
