Search for Spock is all about Kirk/Spock's epic true love and also the crew all working together to defeat everything just for Spock! The Voyage Home has Shatner pretty playing himself and people being all LOL PEOPLE FROM THE FUTURE LOOK FUNNY IN THE PAST. (Kirk and Spock fit in much better in City at the Edge of Forever, I'm just saying.)

That one's actually a pretty popular opinion.

I honestly think it's mostly the "Kirk doesn't seem like Kirk, he seems like Shatner" thing bothering me. Plus Spock is still recovering so he's not really Spock either? And IDK, I felt like all the jokes about them not fitting into the 20th century seemed a little one note. :/

Spock mindmelding with the whales was pretty epic though.

But WHALES. TBH, it's been a long time since I've seen Search for Spock. I grew up on TOS and the movies and as a kid, The Voyage Home was absolutely my favorite.

I suspect I would feel a lot differently if I had watched them all when I was younger instead of all in a row now, actually!

I have nothing against the whales, okay, but I don't get how you people think it compares to Kirk's epic grief for Spock. Like, they're not even real whales! Kirk gets yelled at by Sarek, gives up his entire career and lifetime of duty, destroys the Enterprise (the love of his life) and has his son die just for the slightest chance some speck of Spock might still exist. The whales don't even DO ANYTHING in the movie!

This is all valid, except for all of those things are part of what makes it such art to me, so I really cannot agree with any of it. :(

THEY DON'T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING BESIDES BE MOTHERFUCKING WHALES

I think you mean they don't do anything but SAVE THE PLANET JUST BY BEING THERE AND BEING WHALES BECAUSE WHALES ARE JUST THAT AWESOME.

Besides, I get more from Kirk's epic grief for Spock from Wrath of Khan. I don't dislike Search for Spock, but I'd probably rank them as Wrath of Khan-->Voyage Home-->Search for Spock.

I am not a Kirk/Spock shipper. I will take the whales. Also, it's been forever and ever since I saw Search for Spock, the Voyage Home was just on a few weeks ago.

...I feel like we are at an impasse here.

RELATEDLY: Jules did you ever see that weird show in science class all about whales starring, like, little kid Ben Affleck? The Voyage of the Mimi? That was epic.

Maybe the thing here comes down to I have no way of getting emotionally invested in animals in films/TV/movies/whatever unless they have some direct role or interaction. They might as well just be props to me.

Also, I agree with Wrath of Khan being the best of them all by far!
