I honestly think it's mostly the "Kirk doesn't seem like Kirk, he seems like Shatner" thing bothering me. Plus Spock is still recovering so he's not really Spock either? And IDK, I felt like all the jokes about them not fitting into the 20th century seemed a little one note. :/
Spock mindmelding with the whales was pretty epic though.
I'm sorry you haven't seen the re-remastered edition where they added whales into every episode because they realized that whales improve everything. :(
