Search for Spock is all about Kirk/Spock's epic true love and also the crew all working together to defeat everything just for Spock! The Voyage Home has Shatner pretty playing himself and people being all LOL PEOPLE FROM THE FUTURE LOOK FUNNY IN THE PAST. (Kirk and Spock fit in much better in City at the Edge of Forever, I'm just saying.)

I honestly think it's mostly the "Kirk doesn't seem like Kirk, he seems like Shatner" thing bothering me. Plus Spock is still recovering so he's not really Spock either? And IDK, I felt like all the jokes about them not fitting into the 20th century seemed a little one note. :/

Spock mindmelding with the whales was pretty epic though.

I have nothing against the whales, okay, but I don't get how you people think it compares to Kirk's epic grief for Spock. Like, they're not even real whales! Kirk gets yelled at by Sarek, gives up his entire career and lifetime of duty, destroys the Enterprise (the love of his life) and has his son die just for the slightest chance some speck of Spock might still exist. The whales don't even DO ANYTHING in the movie!

First. I grew up loving Star Trek IV: The Search for Whales. So, I have no objectivity. Whales has, whales, of course. Also, Spock swimming with whales in his underwear. Spock swearing. Nuclear wessels. "Hello computer." Also San Francisco, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium which I've been to many times (see no objectivity.)

But, I totally see your point. I love how they start Search for Spock with a replay of all the saddest, woobiest scenes from Wrath of Khan. Then, every scene with Sarek and Kirk, like "But at what cost? Your ship, your son." "If I hadn't tried, the cost would have been my soul." Of course, there's "Your name is Jim."

But, you're forgetting there's also Christopher Lloyd as a Klingon (is there a word that means both hilarious and horrible at the same time?) Saavik and teenage Spock pon farr sexy times (weirds me out! his mind is empty! if she had waited a little while wouldn't he have just gotten older and been past it?) Also, I always hated how Uhura basically just locked a guy in the closet at the beginning and then wasn't seen again until they get to Vulcan.

So, in conclusion, I like both!

Awww, not at all. Actually I think the way people put II-III-IV together as the trilogy makes a lot of sense too, since they're all so closely connected.

The thing about the Whale movie is that it proves that even when one of them has amnesia, Kirk and Spock are still insanely in love. Also, "they are not the hell your whales"
