schmerica: (smallville)

I remembered one more thing that surprised me about the Smallville premiere -- I really didn't expect them, I think, to show him making the conscious choice *over and over* to keep the red kryptonite. It's not already been a different situation from the two times before, since Clark did this to himself -- but it makes it so that it's not going to be as easy as getting the red kryptonite away from him; the problem isn't the rock, it's Clark and his issues. It won't make sense to have the rock come off and have him suddenly regret everything he's been doing for the past three months, like you could make a case for otherwise, because now he's faced that decision what seems to be dozens of times, and he's made the same choice each time.

Possibly this is obvious to everyone else, but again, it took me by surprise in the premiere -- especially since he seems like every time he puts it back on, it makes him that much more culpable.

Yeah, I thought about that when they showed the promos. It seems to me that Clark's bad decisions are made over and over--making him much more culpable, you're right. I think, in part, he probably thinks his parents could never forgive what he's done and that's why he puts the ring back on. Poor woobster.

Not only that, but he can't really forgive what he's done. So every time he puts it back on, he'd be that much less able to not put it back the next time.

I liked that, precisely because the problem OUGHT to be Clark and his issues; that's what got us here in the first place, after all.

I agree -- I think it's a much more interesting story that way, instead of just the "Oh, jeez!" Clark of before; it seems much deeper and meatier this way. I was still surprised that's where they went, though.

Yes! They're really making his behaviour with the RedK very much analogous to drug or alcohol addiction in humans. Which means, this being Smallville, that there's every likelihood that it'll later be handled in a ham-handed or otherwise inappropriate manner... but for now, it's just that much more interesting and, as you say, about his issues, since that's what's taken him to the point of such self-abusive behaviour. Vicious cycle and all that.

I still haven't gotten past the "jaaaaaack" stage in answering your comments, man. But yes, I agree. Smart jack!
