Somehow the conversation in chat this afternoon got around to college mascots, so I shared the fact that my school's mascot happens to be the geoduck. As [livejournal.com profile] scrunchy and [livejournal.com profile] bexless are not Northwest girls, they had no clue what one was, of course.

So [livejournal.com profile] speshope and I sent them to google image search.

Heh heh heh. Those poor traumatized girls.

bex: merciful zeus
bex: what the frig is that thing???

pearl-o: it's a giant clam.

bex: there is nothing duckesque about it!

stef: i'm gonna have to go look it up, too, aren't i?

bex: it's terrifying! it's like a Thing that Fell to Earth!

stef: gyeah whoa!

bex: i know!!!

stef: that ain't right.

spes: *High fives Erica*

bex: i don't ever want to be within ten feet of one of those things

stef: ew. it's like the Wild Schlong Mollusk

pearl-o: it's pronounced "gooey-duck", too.

bex: omg
bex: you're making this shit up

stef: son of a ... damn.
stef: i'm never going to sleep again.

bex: word. can't sleep. wild schlong mollusk will eat me.
bex: where is this thing? where does it live?
bex: because i want to avoid there

AHAHAHAOMG THAT'S YOUR MASCOT?!

Dude, how can you not love a college like that. OMG.

They used to have a tank full of geoducks at Anzen, back before Uwajimaya drove it out...good times....

And if you go to Uwajimaya (local Asian supermarket) you can get live geoducks. They look especially creepy (the Penis from Outerspace!) when they move from one tank to another, all stretched out of their shells...

the thought that somewhere back in time, some person or persons sat down and debated the finer points of aesthetics, local pride and school spirit, and decided that the geoduck would make a good mascot just makes me giddy with glee. Please tell me that there are school functions where someone has to dress up in a geoduck costume.

You know, I've never actually *seen* it, but the faq page I linked to in the entry actually does have a link to a picture of someone dressed up like that. 'S scary.

Yeah, those are what we who grew up in the Sheepshead Bay area of Brooklyn generally call "piss clams". You can walk along a beach at the water's edge, and when you step on a bed of them, all of a sudden a bunch of little geysers of water will come shooting up around your feet as they pull their, uh, necks down from the surface to be closer to their shells. You see, they dig themselves deep into sand and reach up to the surface with their long appendages to suck in water and filter out the nutrients and algae that they subsist on. The piss clam-digger will then dig them out, steam them or boil them, remove the shells and peel off their tough neck skins, and eat them after dipping them in melted butter (YUM!!!)

Hmm, really? Weird. Everything I read about them was saying they were native to the Pacific region.

I've never eaten one -- I really, I just can't imagine eating a two pound clam, man. It's vaguely off-putting.

SIZE DOES MATTER!!!

Heh. They don't get so big in the comparatively ice-cold waters of the mid-Atlantic, only a few ounces each. But I'd eat a 2 lb. clam in a New York minute! As long as it was steamed & dead & dumped in butter.
