Things I Appreciate And/Or Miss About My Time in Smallville Fandom

1. My experience in this is apparently contrary to, like, most people you hear talk about it, but Smallville was an *awesome* place for me to be a newbie. It was welcoming and coddling -- shut up, I'm serious! There were lots of smart people and high quality stuff, too, and that first year of fandom was totally me sucking in new stuff all the time and learning how to constantly improve and refine my stuff and figure out fandom.

2. I enjoyed being in a closed canon like due South a lot -- you're sort of reshuffling the facts over and over, seeing what you can find that's still new, still worth saying -- but being in a brand new fandom with ever-growing-and-expanding canon was fascinating in its own way, watching everything change, reorganizing it to account for everything, making sense of everything anew as things change.

3. The badfic was exquisite. Seriously. *sighs nostalgically* dS, you have some sucky things I make everybody read, but non-alien-lifeform fandoms really are missing out on so very much.

4. All night chats with [livejournal.com profile] dammitcarl and [livejournal.com profile] valisme and [livejournal.com profile] buggery. Jack is off in comics fandom now, and val and jess have drifted off into non-internet-y pastures. Sigh. Fannish drift is sad.

5. The art was amazing. So very many crazy talented artists. Cover art, wallpapers, all sorts of completely amazing stuff. If due South had more of this, I would die happy on a regular basis.

The badfic was exquisite.

We still speak with awe of the MPREG story where Clark's cock was fifteen feet long.

And as best I remember, oscillating. Or was that the one where it had two heads and was a funky color?

*wanders down nostalgia lane*

I don't know. But it was the one where Mama Kent slapped Lex because he started crying and saying he didn't want to be pregnant again. It might also have been the one where Lex and Clark's wedding outfits, provided by disembodied Jor-El, were lovingly described.

Really, you've seen one mutant alien cock MPREG story, you've seen them all.

Well, c'mon. As we all know, every kryptonian sperm is sacred and people who think otherwise *should* be slapped! Do you know how much Martha would've loved to be impregnated? LEX WAS SO UNGRATEFUL.

The only thing that would have improved the performance of "Every Sperm is Sacred" in Meaning of Life would have been if they were all wearing Superman costumes.

In an amazing coincidence, the only thing that would've improved the performance of the first season of Smallville would've been if they were all naked and on rollerskates.

HALF-NAKED DOESN'T CUT IT, SMALLVILLE. TW chest will not distract us from our quest for full frontal!

I didn't mean by Clark. ^_^ But yeah, if I'd been Lex in that story, that's what I would have said. "You want someone to cherish the human/alien hybrid growing in their large intestine? DO IT YOURSELF."

#1. Smallville was my LJ fandom. I had a good time. I miss out on lots of wank not being a writer.

#2. It is different, but fun. Even if I feel like my "new" opinions have been said by someone else hundreds of times before, so I tend not to meta post.

#3. The badfic was exquisite. HP's quota is about the same...
non-alien-lifeform fandoms really are missing out on so very much. Yep.

#4. [livejournal.com profile] selling_out!! (I still see Jack b/c I dabble in comics-y stuff.)

#5. The art in SV is still very good.

Is there any decent art for due South? I was poking around trying to find a wallpaper the other day and I ran across nothing that didn't look like it was someone's first time with Photoshop.

Hmm. [livejournal.com profile] zoetrope has done some absolutely gorgeous stuff, but mostly icons and narratives (her comic, her seekritsanta entry). Speranza's gallery of covers (http://www.trickster.org/speranza/art.html) for her stories has some nice stuff from a couple of different people. This one (http://teland.com/bruises.html#hcl) of Te's was actually my wallpaper for a really long time, but that's actually HCL, not dS, not matter how pretty CKR is. Mostly for wallpapers I've been using screencaps, because they tend to fit my screen nicely.

I'm sure there's more stuff out there, but I really don't know where to find it.

and the sheer volume of badfic! that was what kept us up at night. in all of my other fandoms, three parts looks epic. and most of it not worth making cryptic, but mean posts about.

good times.

and i don't even have a smallville icon left to match your lonely clark.

Oh, cryptic but mean posts. Those are the best. Plus, in no other fandom did pieces of badfic become like injokes for us. (piek ric, jess!)
