So the farther I get from Thursday night, the more flaws I can totally see in the movie. The plot doesn't really make that much sense; if you like *any* of the characters other than River or Mal, you probably spent some time annoyed or sad about the lack of stuff for them to do (or the differences in them -- hi, Kaylee, what did you do with the girl who loves Serenity?). The whole thing's way darker, and generally different from the show -- I don't even know if I'll be able to watch Firefly, now, for a long time; it feels like the movie really killed it off forever.
Still, though, my primary impression is still "omigod, WOW." I can't think of any movie that's had this much of an emotional impact on me in a really long time -- laughing, smiling, wincing and flinching and jumping. I mentioned the bite marks, right? There was one point I gasped out loud; I don't *know* when the last time that happened to me was.
That said, the only thing that really frustrates me is Inara. In this movie, she was superhot (yay) and had one really good line ("that's not incense"). Otherwise she may as well not have been in the movie at all. I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR YEARS TO FIND OUT ABOUT HER OMG SHOOT YOUR WAD ALREADY JOSS GODDAMN YOU TO HELL OUT OF GAS COMMENTARY.
*cough*
Also, I wasn't in anyway going into this movie looking for pairing or shippiness, but Jesus fucking Christ. The crazy space incest was shoveled on amazingly thick, wasn't it? And, okay, I *love* River/Mal, and have since I saw "Objects in Space", but I loved it in full knowledge it was a crazy fringe pairing with no more support than a mutual Serenity-obsession and a cute scene in spacesuits. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH MY SHIPPY SELF WITH THIS MUCH CANON SUPPORT! I'm kind of freaked out! With the little one and darling and the picking her up when she's asleep and then their both being badasses and then the copiloting and and and and!!!
I wonder what it will be like watching the second time, knowing Wash is actually dead. I didn't believe it in the movie when I was watching it; I thought they would come back and he'd be unconscious and horrible shape but that they'd fix him up. I thought it all the way until the gravestones. I guess I hadn't truly realized it was a movie and not a TV show, still.

Maybe next time I watch the movie, Wash won't die!

1/10/05 22:57 (UTC)BUT YOU TOO, RIGHT?!
Also you know what was incredibly hot? When Mal and Simon were practically doing it onscreen for the first twenty minutes. Wtf?

1/10/05 23:36 (UTC)SURE! Just, you first!
Heeeeee, I'm so lame. I NEVER see the boyslash in Firefly EVER. I appear to be strangely immune to it!

3/10/05 00:10 (UTC)I think it's 'cause with Mal arguing = foreplay. Ahahaha.

1/10/05 21:48 (UTC)My other problem? I've seen Summer and Nathan at..um... 3 conventions is it now? maybe 2, but they act like that all the time in real life together, so I see it more as protective big brother. I'm still a tad pouty about Simon not being as stiff, but in the meantime I feel the need to go and set up shrines to Zoe. And yes, still going 'Wash! Noooooooo!'

1/10/05 23:36 (UTC)It was YOU!
5/10/05 12:04 (UTC)Over the summer someone got this Mal/River idea into my head and it Would Not Leave. Going into the theater this weekend I could *not* remember who? Or where from?!?
It was YOU! I think? *rereads Unexpected Pearls* Grains of lovely wrongness in there. So lovely.
*reads Flesh and Blood like new*
. . .
She... him. Damn. Yes I blame you for planting the seed long ago when this fandom was new and shiny. God that was beautiful.
Is there more Mal/River anywhere?
