She's a Man: Cute and quite a lot of fun, but really astonishingly degayed for something based on Twelfth Night. I would not have guessed it was possible to that extent! Also, before this movie I was under the impression that I disliked Amanda Bynes, but she was actually quite appealling.

General question: why is it that girls in drag in movies and TV, often in serious and life-altering situations, always choose to keep their hair long and wear a wig over it? I realize the dramatic wig removal and display of feminine locks is very impressive looking, but it still seems stupid. It makes more sense here than in the television episode I saw it in a few weeks ago, though, where it was a situation where the chick was going to be killed or lose her job if they found out she wasn't a boy.

In my favorite take the place of your twin movie, the girl actually did cut her hair. Also, Mulan did too... though she kind of did the dramatic hair reveal by LETTING IT DOWN. OOOOh.

There's a movie from the 80s that I never fail to watch when it's on cable -- Just One of the Guys -- and the girl does cut her hair (to the chagrin of her boyfriend who she eventually dumps for the guy she eventually befriends as a boy). She actually resembles Ralph Macchio quite a bit in her guy incarnation, but is still cute as a girl. The big reveal was her showing her breasts to her new best guy pal after the dramatic fight at the beachside prom. Classic. *g*

Hee, yeah, my "always" there is definitely hyperbolic, based on, uh, very few (but frustrating!) data points.

Piping up with another counter-example: in this excellent version of Robin Hood Maid Marian cuts off her hair and goes undercover as one of the merry men. :)

Also, that sounds really cool.

Heh. You haven't seen the (foreign art-house) movie Osama, then. There's a moving scene where the grandmother cuts the girl's hair so she can pass as a boy (in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan) and therefore get a job and save the family from starvation.

It's a good but quite serious and somewhat strange movie.

hmmmm. i am full of angst at the degaying. on the other hand, that means that there's still room for my Very Gay Twelfth Night In High School when i am rich and famous and influential.

There is DEFINITELY room for another! It's really not very closely tied at all. Bring in the gay!
