Five times Duck didn't tell Buddy that he was gay.
1. In high school they used to sit in the woods over by the beach sometimes and smoke pot. Buddy would tell him about the latest girls he was dating or in love with. Duck would just smile and nod and pass the joint back again. 2. There was this party once, when they were 21 or so, and Duck got so loaded he couldn't walk home alone. Buddy took him home, walked him up to the door and into his bedroom. They stood there for a second and Duck came this close to leaning forward and kissing Buddy right on the mouth, but Buddy pushed him to sit down the bed just in time and the moment passed. 3. He came back to the island for his mom's funeral. Buddy came over to the house to pay his condolences; Duck was on the phone with Gary, checking in with him. He finished the conversation off without saying his name or anything identifying once. 4. When he moved back to the island for good, a lot of people asked him why. Sometimes he didn't say anything. Sometime he said he just realized the mainland wasn't what he wanted. Those were both true. When Buddy asked, Duck told him he'd gotten out of a bad relationship. That was true too. 5. He and Dan showed up on the front stoop of the Frenches' house the day they were invited for dinner. Buddy opened to door and took the cake from Duck's hands and let them inside.
