also, i'd never really thought about it this way before, but something downpage made me realize:

mikey has alicia and pete, who are basically genderswapped versions of each other.

GERARD has frank and lyn-z, who...are basically genderswapped versions of each other.

my question: WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THE BROTHERS WAY? like - do they have to collect one of each? is it some sort of freaky compulsion?

and now i kind of want to write stories about the SISTERS way, wherein they still wind up heterosexually married, but also still have their MATCHED SETS. And, idk. Orgies, or something.

SERIOUSLY THOUGH: I am kind of convinced that Gerard and Mikey are actually from the Planet Of The Genderswapping Aliens. Think about it! It explains so much. They like to date matched sets, because on their HOME WORLD, they would have dated people who were sometimes boys and sometimes girls.

the only question that remains to be answered is whether or not they KNOW about this. Like - are they aware of the way of things on their home planet? do they even KNOW that they're space aliens? Are they just hiding it all? is that the REAL reason their old drummer left?

the real question, at this point, is whether or not they know. Like - did Mikey actually realize he was dating two separate people? or did he just think it was kind of cute that Pete/Alicia went by different names for different bodies?

OH MAN, though. Now I really want to know what it was like when THEY were growing up, swapping back and forth and CONFUSING EVERYONE. awkward teenage craziness: CAN ONLY BE IMPROVED BY ACCIDENTAL GENDERSWAP.

heeeee. the Ways figure out pretty early that other people aren't Like Them, although it takes them both a while. So they, you know. They try to keep to one gender or another! and to keep things mostly constant (although Mikey is a girl for all of 10th grade, and nobody really notices).

But I think that they've got to get curious, at some points - that, or bored, or they just can't keep it under control because they're freaking out or whatever - and then they switch back and forth a lot. And, like - it's not super-obvious; one of the things about things on Their Planet is that they're pretty androgynous either way. Nobody really notices, and so there's not a whole hell of a lot of incentive for either of them to figure out how to stop it, so they...just never do.

And some mornings, Gerard is a girl, and some evenings, Mikey is, and sometimes neither, and sometimes both.

I'm actually crying with laughter. YOU ARE SO COMPLETELY RIGHT. I mean, I'd noticed the Frank = Lyn-Z thing before (how can you NOT? In some pictures of Lyn-Z on stage, it's only the pigtails and skirt that tell you she's not Frank) but I hadn't given much thought to the Mikeyway side of things, and just. Cripes! They have to get a little salt-and-pepper matching set of people! And society is mean and oppressive so they can only marry one of them, so they choose the one that the law lets them actually marry, but they're totes actually wrapped up in the most epic threesomes ever. And they sometimes have coffee and talk about the stresses and joys of having a loving polygamous relationship with a rockstar and an awesome chick (who may or may not also be a rockstar).
