Last night I sat down to watch Battlestar Galactica on NBC, because my friends list has been talking nonstop about its awesomeness since it came out.

OMIGOD I WAS SO BORED. I managed to sit out the whole first hour, but then I turned the TV off before the next two they were showing.

I think there are several lessons here.

LESSON ONE: The tenth episode in a series is a really lousy place to start watching because you are confused out of your mind.

LESSON TWO: There are few things more boring than space battles, especially in conjunction with Lesson One.

LESSON THREE: None of this would be a problem if I had cable, dammit. I miss Sci-Fi Channel and the Food Network and VH1 and Comedy Central. I sulk!

Since BSG is truly a character-driven show, it's rather ironic you were turned off by a space battle. There are very few of them. *g* I really recommend you grab the miniseries and watch that; if that doesn't do it for you, then you probably won't get hooked.

Well, it wasn't all a space battle. Some of it was plannign for the space battle. And it's possible all the character stuff mainly went over my head because I didn't know the characters. I'm thinking starting at the beginning would be a wise choice.

It's not just you. I stuck it out for five whole weeks before I realized that I was dozing off in the middle of episodes. I don't know what it is-- the pacing, the seriousness of the tone, the almost purposeful confusingness-- but it was BSG versus ADD, and the ADD won.

I would give you cable if I could.

I'll probably give it another chance from the beginning to check it out; from what I've seen it's really difficult to say whether it's all the circumstances or if it's the show itself too.

LESSON FOUR: CKR can make shows you've never seen before or know anything about entertaining ;)

Dude, that only works if you watch the parts with him in it.

Someone needs to send Pearl-O some tapes. Mine are out on loan, but we MUST addict her. This is of utmost national importance.

No, that's a bad plan! Then I would feel really guilty if I didn't watch them. Guilt is a bad incentive to pimping.

See, I kinda agree - while I've liked BSG, I haven't *loved* it. It would help to see the eps in order, but imo they are inconsistent in pacing and quality; some are really engaging and some are just a yawn. I do think the miniseries is out on DVD now, if you haven't seen that - at least that has some CKR in it.

*nod* I'll probably give the miniseries a try. If nothing else, then I will know who everybody is!

*grins* Like I said, I'm going to go ahead and give the bits with CKR a chance at some point.

It wasn't until after the Leoben episode that I was caught up. It's a slow-moving series in some ways, but it rewards repeated viewing. I'm particularly taken with all the female characters, it's surprising to find so many that are so important in different ways.

Well. I didn't get to see the first ep, but the second was really disturbingly soap opera-like. I mean:

Boomer: I'm PREGNANT!

Helo: OH NOES! I feel guilty now.

Starbuck: DIE, BOOMER!

Helo: No, you can't kill her! She's pregnant!

Though I love BSG when Starbuck is awesome, and I like space battle in BSG only because the Vipers have amazing construction.

I sulk with you in lack of Scifi Channel! *sulks*
