Because, um, I couldn't sleep last night and ended up doing this instead. Hmm.

Setting: Northeast United States, biggest excesses of the Jazz Age era.

Main Characters:

Ralph and Clara Westcott (Paul Gross and Molly Parker): Twins, rich, attractive, smart, seductive. They like parties and fun and decadence and beautiful things. Ralph is quieter and subtler, and Clara is louder and more overt, but they both get what they want. They have a very complex and fucked-up relationship between themselves.

Harry Dove (Callum Keith Rennie): A brilliant artist who's been struggling for years, he's just had his first big success, which is how he ends up at one of the Westcotts' parties. Ralph and Clara adopt him as a sort of pet, and he gets more and more involved with them, staying with them, getting sucked into their own little incestuous world.

Minor characters:

Chauncey Lofton (Don McKellar): one of their frequent party guests. Born rich and high class, arrogant, committed socialist who talks all the time about the common man.

Alma Sullivan (Rachel McAdams): another frequent guest and friend. Pretty, fast, likes cocktails and short skirts and cigarette holders and dancing all night; wants nothing more than to be outrageous.

Marguerite Heller (Martha Burns): another one of their circle. Avant-garde poet, intelligentsia, obsessed with culture. Probably the one who first discovers Harry Dove and brings him along.

Mae Cottle (Ellen Page): Clara's daughter from her short-lived marriage. A prodigy and genius who spends the majority of her time at school in Europe, only arriving at the Westcotts' for occasional brief visits.

Frank Cottle (Peter Outerbridge): Clara's ex and Mae's father. He was the Westcotts' chauffeur before he and Clara eloped when she was 18. The marriage only lasted a few months before Clara came back home, had the baby, and then forgot the whole thing like it had never happened.

Bess (Katherine Heigl): Very pretty, sort of shy and naive maid in the house. She tries to be proper, and gets embarrassed easily when the master and mistress notice her to flirt her and tell her how pretty she is, etc.

Julius (Jeffrey Dean Morgan): Another servant; he pretty much runs the entire household and knows everything that is ever going on there.

ANYWAY. In the world of REAL FANDOMS! I just watched Heroes 1x05, and oh my god, dudes. I feel like I should have lots and lots to say about this show, so it's really weird that I don't, not at all. All I have to say is BWEEEEEEEEEE THIS SHOW I LOVE YOU SO MUCH SQUEE SQUEE SQUEE. I am ridiculously in love.

On the list of things that fandom is making me do that I will probably regret in the near future:

a) I'm downloading Hard Candy for Ellen Page.

b) I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] rps_advent. Eeeep!

So is it sad that just by reuniting Izzie and Denny in your head, you've made me a Bess/Julius shipper in your imaginary fandom?

Not. Helping.

(Also, interesting that Clara is the more outgoing one -- I was seeing it the other way in my head, but... yeah. That works.)

I'm totally helping, you don't even know!

But, yeah, I think Clara is totally outgoing -- very dramatic, always seeking entertainment. And Ralph is quieter and is one of those people who always looks amused and superior, and is good at saying really witty mean sarcastic things. (He says them to Harry when they're standing in the corner at one of the parties, while Harry sips his drink, and Ralph talks quietly enough that he has to lean forward to murmur it into Harry's ear in his low, husky voice -- and what he says is almost cruel, but also funny, and Harry feels weirdly special that *he's* the one Ralph's saying it to.)

Um, yeah.

That is so fascinating, because that is almost exactly how I'd pictured her -- someone constantly saying extremely wicked things in a very soft, cultured, ladylike voice -- but now that I'm thinking of it the other way round...

Oh, God, I want this to be real. And I kind of really want to write fic for it, actually.

So what's the difference between an imaginary fandom and an original fiction idea?

(no subject)

25/10/06 01:13 (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] pearl-o.livejournal.com
Well -- like I said in some of the comments, I have no desire to actually write this, you know? The things that are interesting in this to me are partly the thing itself -- which would be something I would enjoy if someone else created it -- and partly applying what I love about fandom (the community, writing the good parts, the whole thing) to what this would be if it existed.

Um, I know I'm weird.

Okay, how old are these people with respect to eachother? Because I was going to go by actor ages, but PG and Molly Parker aren't near each other in the slightest, so I'm thinking you must have some plan layed out.

7/11/06 23:12 (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] pearl-o.livejournal.com
Ha, yes, that is totally a handwavey part. So I mean, in Men With Brooms MP and PG are clearly supposed to be within a couple years of each other -- and then there's stuff like how in dS, CKR is playing the same age as Anne-Marie Loder, who's a decade younger, too. So basically, I feel okay saying "the hell with it" and CKR, MP and PG all about the same age. The same with Martha Burns, Don McKellar, Peter Outerbridge, etc -- all the same generation. Rachel McAdams always seems to play young, so I was imagining her somewhat younger, and obviously Ellen Page is a different generation.

So if, say, someone from the older generation were to hit on Rachel McAdams, would this be considered hot, stupid, or just plain sick?

(no subject)

8/11/06 00:30 (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] pearl-o.livejournal.com
It depends on the person, but I lean towards hot! Maybe a decade or so difference? I would not be surprised if she and Molly Parker have made out before to enliven boring parties.
