Stupid question time! So, all my music in on the other computer. It's *also* on my iPod. Am I right in thinking there's no way to get it all transferred from the iPod to the new computer, instead of having to figure out how the hell to get it all off of the old computer? And second, how do I add music from the new computer to the iPod without it deleting all the songs that aren't in this library?

Problem solved and music has been transferred! Thanks so much, guys.

Gmail is being absolute bitch to me, sadly. I'm not getting any livejournal comments, and it also seems to be holding beta responses hostage, which is incredibly frustrating.

I'm bored and listening to Fall Out Boy and reading bandslash. Whatt the hell? GODDAMMIT ZEE. :[ I have had "This Ain't a Scene, It's a Goddammn Arms Race" stuck in my head for two days.

(Back in the day, popslash was really one of my favorite not-in-the-fandom-but-joy-in-reading places, but I haven't read it in quite a while. So it's understandable that when Zee goes "Look! Cute boys! They make music! And LOVE each other! And they're big dorky BOYS!" I go "Oh, really?"

Anyway. Links to stories?)

In conclusion, SERIOUSLY GMAIL GIVE ME MY MAIL.

You can download something called PodUtil, or you can do this, which is what I did:

1. Plug in your iPod.
2. From the Desktop, go to My Computer and find the iPod (it will look like a new hard drive and is usually designated by a drive letter. i e. E: or F:)
3. Open it.
4. Go to Tools > Folder Options > View (the tab) > scroll to Show Hidden Files and Folders and click it.
5. Click OK
6. Go back to your iPod folder/drive, there you will find a new folder called iPod_Control
7. Open it.
8. The Music folder in it will have a bunch of folders named F00, F01 and so on. These contain all your music, in my case approx. 100 tracks each.
9. Highlight and drag them into iTunes, either the main window or where it says Library.
10. Voila! :)

YAY. You are my hero, Bex!

(So it won't start updating as soon as I plug it in and delete everything?)

Well. This is the thing: I've heard people say their iPods do this, but mine never has. Ever. So...I can't guarantee it won't happen, because i have no experience with it! :(

On the apple website, it says you can turn off automatic updating:

1. Connect iPod to your computer
2. Open iTunes.
3. Select iPod in the iTunes source list.
4. Click the Options button.
5. Select "Manually manage songs and playlists.

I hope it works! I will feel terrible if you lose all your music!

I imagine it will if you have Automatic Updating turned on. So be sure to turn that off before you plug it into the new computer.

If you haven't installed iTunes yet, I'd probably connect it, open the folder, copy the music, and then unplug and install iTunes. Your computer will acknowledge the iPod without iTunes installed (...I don't use iTunes kind of ever, so.).

I use a program called iDump (http://www.download.com/iDump/3000-2169_4-10407429.html) to copy files from my iPod to my computer. It's worked great for me. And I second the comment about selecting the 'Manually manage' for your iTunes library.

You can't reverse load it, that I know, and if you hook it up to the new computer it'll probably wipe the iPod library. iTunes 7.0 has maybe a way to get around it? I've never used it though.

Re: transfering music, set up a dummy AIM account and do a "Transfer Folder". Usually helps if you've broken it up into 3 or 4 parts (depending on the size of your library), sometimes it goes crazy fast. Sometimes not. At least that's what I do. Now I have an external hard drive, so I think that's what I get to do now.
